Belles Travel to Colorado Springs for NCAA Tournament

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State soccer team will take on West Texas A&M at 3 p.m. CDT (2 p.m. MDT) on Friday in Colorado Springs, Colorado in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Belles (13-4-1) finished the regular season atop the Lone Star Conference and earned the No. 3 seed in the South Central Region for their performance.

This will be the second straight game and the fourth overall that ASU has taken on WT, as the Belles and Lady Buffs faced off in the LSC Tournament Championship last Sunday. ASU has a 1-1-1 record against WT this year.

Fellow LSC member Midwestern State also made the postseason tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face Colorado School of Mines in the first round.

Angelo State had the top offense in the conference during the regular season, averaging exactly two goals per game and 8.56 shots on goal a game.

Trenadey Scott was the offensive leader for the Belles, scoring 15 goals, five of which were game-winners. She also added in four assists for a total of 34 points on the year. The total is the second most in a single season in ASU history.

Six other Angelo State players have scored multiple goals this season, including Cassandra Moosburger with six, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Mackenzie Broderick with three, and Analise Watson, Ally Warren and Avery McNeme with two apiece.

McNeme scored the loan ASU goal in the conference tournament last weekend, marking just the second of her collegiate career. The freshman also has four assists, which is tied for the team lead.

One other Belle has had a strong season setting up her teammates to score in Megan Allen, who also has four assists.

Defensively, Angelo State has been led by center back Callie Smith, who has the most minutes played of any field player. Smith, along with fellow back line members Marissa Brezgiel, Meagan Denn, Molly Warren, Kylie Deel, Cecilia Guerrero and Amber Norris have improved throughout the season, allowing an average of just one goal per game.

Goalkeeper Sammy Cude has also helped to solidify the Belle defense, making 89 saves this year and holding a save percentage of .832, which is second best in the LSC.

Overall, the Belles have recorded seven shutouts this season.

West Texas A&M is 10-6-5 and coming off a win of the LSC Postseason Tournament. They are led by LSC Tournament MVP Khaline Jacobs, who has four goals this season and forward Noir Hawash who has added in five scores of her own.

The winner of the matchup will advance to the second round to face the No. 2 seed UC-Colorado Springs.
