Angelo State Takes Down Chaps In Regional Road Match-up

LUBBOCK, Texas – With five players scoring in double-figures, the Angelo State men's basketball team downed Lubbock Christian, 83-77, on Tuesday night.

The Rams improved to 9-2 overall with Tuesday's out of conference win over the Chaps. With senior forward Brandon Williams leading the way with a season high 19 points, ASU had four others rack up double-digits in James Kirksey (17), Antonio Singleton (14), Daron Mims (11) and Ja'Michael Brown (10).

ASU outscored the Chaps in second chance points (16-14), fast break points (10-8) and points in the paint (46-38). The Rams tallied a stellar 14 assists on the night with Brown leading with six. Williams also led with a team high 13 points, while Kirksey pocked six steals to head the defense. Lubbock Christian falls to 4-8 on the season with the home loss.

Angelo State got things started fast taking an 8-1 lead right out of the gate. The early led was gained via a pair of 3-balls from Will Adler and Singleton, as well as Brown layup in the paint. At the 16:33 mark, a Williams's layup would give the Rams its greatest lead of the half with nine-point difference (12-3).

The Chaps would slowly cut the Angelo State lead, and regained it with 5:33 on the cock and 27-26 on the scoreboard. Despite a monster dunk by Williams and two more free throws from Singleton, the Rams would be unable to take back the lead before heading into the halftime break.

Singleton would then open the second a half stroking a short-range jumper to kick of an 11-3 run to regain the lead (45-44). LCU would briefly regain a lead at the 16:07 mark before it would change hands again with Mims and Singleton knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers with 15:12 left in the game.

The lead would then change hands twice more, before a 7-1 Rams' run that included a major fast break slam from Kirksey (4:56) placed the team in the driver's seat for the final time. Kiair Crouch, Williams and Kirksey sunk five consecutive shots from the charity stripe to close out the game for ASU.

The Rams will now have about a week off for the holidays before they return to the court to take on McMurray on Thursday, December 28th. Tipoff for this home game is slated for 7:00 p.m. in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
