No. 13 Belles Tops MSU for Fourth Straight Win

SAN ANGELO - The No. 13 Angelo State women's basketball team won its fourth straight game Saturday afternoon, defeating Midwestern State 65-45 in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.

The Belles (18-2, 12-2 LSC) held the Mustangs (6-14, 3-11 LSC) to just points on 29 percent shooting for the game, which is tied for the lowest point total by an opponent this season. The Belles also held Texas A&M International to just 45 points in their second game of the season.

On the offensive end, ASU shot 43 percent as a team including 37.5 percent from behind the arc. Senior Taylor Dorsey led the way with 18 points in the game, chipping in two assists and a block and a steal as well. Two other Belles, Jasmine Prophet and Christina Robinson, finished the game in double-figures as well with 13 and 10 points respectively.

Prophet had one of her best all-around performances of the season against Midwestern State as she grabbed two steals, had two blocks and pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds on the night. The senior is sixth in the conference in rebounding this season, averaging 7.4 boards per game.

ASU also saw productive minutes from Keanna Kelly and Madi Greenwood who had eight points each in the game. Greenwood also had a pair of assists and a steal in the game, while Kelly contributed a team-high three blocks.

The Belles opened the game with the hot hand, scoring six straight points before the Mustangs ever got a basket, and they would continue to push the gap throughout the opening period. ASU would close out the quarter on a 12-4 run, putting themselves ahead by a comfortable 18-9 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Midwestern State matched the Belles point for point in the second quarter, however, as a 7-0 run in the middle of the period cut the deficit to just eight. Prophet stopped the run with a jumper in the paint, but the back-and-forth scoring through the rest of the quarter kept the Mustangs within nine heading into the locker room.

Kelly got Angelo State on the board in the second half with a pair of free throws, but MSU would continue to match the Belles and keep the game close through the first five minutes of the third quarter. With 4:13 remaining in the period, however, Dorsey hit a jumper that sparked an 8-2 ASU run, putting the Belles on top 47-34 at the end of the fourth quarter.

Robinson kicked off the final quarter with five straight points and the first eight Belles' points to open up a 19-point lead. The gap would get to its widest point with 4:21 remaining in the game as Prophet hit a layup to put ASU up 60-38. The game would close out with the Belles hitting free throws, eventually securing a 20-point lead.

Angelo State will be on the road for its next two games as it takes on Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday and faces Tarleton State in Stephenville on Saturday.
