SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State volleyball team completed the day with a pair of sweeps, first downing Limestone College (25-12, 25-13, 25-18) then Colorado Christian (25-17, 29-27, 25-16) in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center on Friday.
The Belles, now 2-0 on the year, extended its home winning streak to 22-0 with the victories. With the losses Limestone College started its season 0-1 and Colorado Christian fell to 0-2 on the year.
"We started off really strong this morning and came out aggressive," commented Head ASU Volleyball Coach Chuck Waddington. "In the second match we weren't quite as clean as we have been and when we got pressed we responded to that pretty well. I was very pleased with that. I thought both of our right sides, Sundara [Chinn] and Abbie [Lynn] played very well today and really efficient. Our middles got it going and once that happens it opens it up for our outsides, Brianna [Sotello] and Bailey [Drum]. Micheala [Sifuentes] also dug a ton of balls for us and I really liked seeing that from her, as well."
Outside hitter and senior, Brianna Sotello led the Belles with 22 kills between the matches, while newcomer Sundara Chinn followed with 19 for the day. Setter Meghan Parker tallied 48 total assists. Defensively, Libero Micheala Sifuentes dug a team leading 32 balls. In addition, Morgan Seaton (8) and Anna Graham (8) headed the Belles in the total blocks category. The squad posted a .330 clip in its match against Limestone on offense and recorded 17 total blocks on defense between the two matches.
In the first match of the day, ASU got things started early with an 11-3 run right out of the gate. This run saw big swings from Seaton, Graham and Chinn. This was also accompanied by a big block from Graham and redshirt freshman Bailey Drum, who also fired in her first collegiate kill to add to the 11 points. The Saints responded piecing together a several points but the Belles would pull away and Drum would close out the set for ASU with another kill.
Sotello kicked things off in the second set placing the first two points on the board for Angelo State. LC kept it close, until a pair of Saint attack errors would allow the Belles to begin to pull away. These would be followed up by right side hitter Abbie Lynn dropping in two consecutive kills that would grant ASU a 11-5 lead. Later on in the set Drum and Graham would team up again to block a Limestone attack increasing the Belles lead to 20-10. A Parker service ace would give ASU a 2-0 lead heading into the break.
In the final set of the match, Chinn would score three of the first five points for the Belles. However, Limestone kept it tight and would take a 6-5 lead. It was at this point that another attack error would squander a small Saints run, and an ace from freshman, Bailey Mulder would return the lead to ASU. The Belles would maintain the lead and secure the sweep.
Angelo State started the second match much as it did the first, placing the first points on the board. This time via a Sotello kill. Colorado Christian, however would keep it even until a pair of Cougar mistakes would kick off an 8 -1 ASU run that would push the Belles in front by a score of 15-8. Steadily increasing its lead, ASU would continue to create some distance until CCU pieced together some points to bring it back to within five, with 22-17 on the board. Sophomore Eadara Files would set up Sotello and Lynn on a string of kills that would close out the set in favor of Angelo State.
Once again ASU would start a set strong as it opened the second set with a 8-2 run, which included four Chinn kills and a Seaton ace. Â The Belles held on to its lead until the Cougars laid down a 8-2 run of their own that brought the score to an even 17.
