ODESSA - The Angelo State soccer team notched a win to begin Lone Star Conference play, beating Texas Permian Basin 4-1 on Wednesday night in Odessa.
The Belles (4-1-0, 1-0-0 LSC) set a new season high in shots on goal with 16 and also matched their season high in goals (4), shots (23) and points (12).
"There wasn't a great rhythm to this game because of all the fouls called, but overall I was pleased with the outcome," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "Defensively, I'm still looking for us to get shutouts, and I felt like we missed an opportunity to do that tonight. But we created a lot of chances to score and took advantage of them, so it was a good win."
Senior Tiffany Dang opened the scoring for ASU 12 minutes into the match with her first goal of the season. Dang received the ball from sophomore Trenadey Scott and shot it past the goalkeeper from the left side, earning Scott her first assist of the season.
Both Dang and Scott would factor into the Belles' next goal as well, both assisting Elizabeth Rodriguez on the score. Dang took a corner kick to start the scoring opportunity, and the loose ball was passed from Scott to Rodriguez for the score.
The goal, which came in the 21st minute, was the third for Rodriguez on the season, who ended the night with two total shots that were both on goal.
Texas Permian Basin got its first and only goal of the game with just four minutes left in the first half, as Scarlett Real re-directed a cross into the goal. The Belles went into the break up 2-1.
It was the only goal Angelo State would give up all night. Overall, the back line of Callie Smith, Janessa Dunbar, Kyah Carlsen, Meagan Denn, Kylie Deel, Molly Warren and Jaclyn Wittke limited UTPB to just eight shots with only five coming on goal.
Goalkeeper Sammy Cude help to fortify the defense making three saves. Senior Elyssia Lucio also saw her first action in goal late in the second half, playing for nine minutes and making one save.
ASU got the goal back 13 minutes into the second half, with Scott finding the back of the net herself this time. Cassandra Moosburger assisted the goal, as Scott scored for the sixth time this season.
Scott had six total shots on the night as well as four on goal to lead the team. She has six goals through the first five games, leading the LSC in goals per game at 1.2 and is also first in the conference in points as well with 14.
"We limited Trenadey's minutes a little bit tonight to keep her fresh, but I thought she was very effective in the time she was on the field," McCorkle noted. "She had a beautiful pass to Tiffany Dang on the first goal and was just creating a lot of chances for us to score."
Many other Belles created scoring opportunities as well, as nine total players recorded shots on goal. Besides the goal scorers, Avery McNeme had a pair of shots on goal, Â as did Megan Allen, and Molly Warren, Ally Warren and Analise Watson had one each as well.
The final ASU goal of the game came in the 76th minute on the Belles' first penalty kick of the season. Cassandra Moosburger took the kick after UTPB was called for a handball. The junior fired the ball past the Falcon goalkeeper to make the score 4-1, where the game ended.
The Belles will face Midwestern State next, taking on the Mustangs at 8 p.m. Friday night in Wichita Falls.
