WICHITA FALLS - The Angelo State soccer team defeated Midwestern State 3-2 on Friday night in Wichita Falls, as junior forward Cassandra Moosburger scored a golden goal in the first overtime to seal the victory.
The Belles are now 5-1 on the season and 2-0 in conference play after setting a new season-high in shots in the game with 24.
Moosburger's goal came in the 97th minute of the match from the right side of the goal. It was her first game-winner ever with the Belles and her fourth goal on the season, which is the second most on the team. She was assisted by Avery McNeme, marking her second of the season.
"Honestly, I thought maybe the goalkeeper had a play on it and I'm not sure how Cassie got it by her," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "Several times this season though, she has shown she can be in the right place in the right time. And I'm not a big believer in luck, so I've been really impressed with her ability to do that. "
Angelo State was forced into the overtime after being up 2-0 earlier in the second half.
Both of the first two goals were scored by sophomore forward Trenadey Scott, who now has eight on the season and leads the Lone Star Conference.
Neither team scored in the first half, but Scott broke the tie in the 66th minute. The Fort Worth native shot the ball from the left of the goal up into the top right corner, putting the Belles up 1-0 with a little more than 20 minutes left to play.
Just five minutes later Scott scored again, this time on her first penalty kick of the season. She had eight total shots to lead the team and tied for the team lead with three on goal.
Moosburger was the only other player with three shots on goal on the night and the junior had four overall.
Loni Byers and Mackenzie Broderick also both had shots on goal and four other Belles took shots, including Avery McNeme, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Morgan Sibson and Callie Smith.
Smith also anchored the ASU defense against the Mustangs, which allowed the fewest shots (8) and fewest shots on goal (4) of any opponent this season. MSU got off just one shot the entire first half. The back line was completed by Marissa Brezgiel, Meagan Denn, Kylie Deel and Kyah Carlsen.
Sammy Cude played the whole 97 minutes of the game in goal, stopping a pair of shots in the game to bring her season save total to 33.
"I told the girls at the end of regulation that we were going to learn a lesson from this game and it would either be learned the easy way or the hard way," McCorkle said. "I'm glad we were able to get the win and learn it the easy way."
The Belles will be back at home for their next two games, taking on West Texas A&M at 7 p.m. on September 29 before facing Eastern New Mexico at 1 p.m. on October 1 in the annual "Pink on the Pitch" game.
