Rams Set School Record for 3-Pointers in Win Over WNMU

SILVER CITY, New Mexico – Sinking a school record 17 shots from beyond the arch, the Angelo State men's basketball team downed Western New Mexico, 92-73, on the road Thursday night.

With a career high 21 points and 10 boards, Will Adler led the Rams to victory. With the win Angelo State improved to 13-4 overall and 5-3 in the conference. Ja'Michael Brown (18), Kiair Crouch (16) Daron Mims (12) and Davion Cole-Johnson (11) followed Alder in leading ASU in total points scored for the night. This also marked a career high in points scored for Crouch and Cole-Johnson. The team's 17 total 3-pointers made surpassed the 2003 program record of 15 made 3-pointers against Bible Baptist College (Missouri).

As a team, Angelo State shot over 50 percent from all areas of the court, hitting 54.1 percent of its shots inside the arch, 58.6 percent of its shots from deep and 60 percent from the charity stripe. In addition, the Rams pulled down 39 rebounds, 33 of which were defensive. Western New Mexico drops to 3-14, 0-8 LSC.

"Anytime you can get a road win in the LSC, you are pleased with the result," commented ASU Head Coach. "This is such a tough conference and this very long road trip presents several challenges. I thought our guys did a better job of moving the ball offensively in the second half and it created some open looks for our shooters. We knew when we recruited this group that they had the ability to stretch the floor and shoot it well. We are certainly happy those shots fell tonight!"

The Mustangs were the first to put points on the board as it open the game taking the lead. However, Adler immediately answered with the first of his career high seven 3-pointers on the night. Exchanging the lead multiple time throughout the first half, WNMU took its largest lead of the game with 16-11 on the board at the 11:58 mark in the first half.

It would be until Adler stroked yet another deep ball with 5:59 left in the half that the Rams took the lead for the final time. James Kirksey would close out the half for Angelo State making a jumper from inside the paint. ASU then took a 38-36 lead into the break.

Led by Cole-Johnson, who scored six points during the Rams 9-2 opening run, ASU opened the second half building upon its prior momentum. At the 13:22 mark, Mims knocked down a 3-ball to start another 12-5 run that would continue to push the Rams lead to 15 points (67-52). After this, Angelo State proceeded to sink five consecutive 3-pointers, with shots coming from Adler, Mims, Crouch and Brown. This left Angelo State with a 17-point lead (76-59) and 7:22 on the clock.

With 5:04 left in the game, William Tchiengang added himself to the score sheet as he rolled in a layup. Hitting a final 3-pointer for ASU and closing out the scoring for the Rams, Mims sank a deep ball to give the squad its largest lead of the game, 92-68 (+24), with 1:12 left. The Mustangs then dropped in two more shots, but it would be far from enough to mount any serious threat to a Rams' victory.

Angelo State continues its road trip with its next stop in Portales, New Mexico. There is where the Rams are slated to take on the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds on Saturday, January 20 at 5 p.m. CDT. This game will also be broadcasted live on 1260 KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
