SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State baseball team fell just short of a comeback win Friday night, losing 10-9 to Colorado State-Pueblo at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The Rams (7-4) were plagued by eight errors, which is the second most in a single game in ASU program history. Of the 10 ThunderWolve runs scored on the night, only three were earned.
"It's hard to win when you have eight errors and they just got the three earned runs," Angelo State head baseball coach said. "We can't just give games to people, but we seem to have done that a lot this year."
Angelo State's offense showed up early in the game and helped the team take an early lead. Jonathan Soberanes laid down a perfect bunt single to lead off the game and advanced to second on a single from Nicholas Novak. The bases were loaded up when Jacob Boston walked and Mitch Henshaw was hit by a pitch for the first of three times on the night.
Soberanes then came around to score when Bradley Mathiowetz worked a walk as well to give ASU the lead. The first inning signaled a good night for Soberanes, who reached base six times on three walks and three singles, bringing his on-base percentage up to .583.
The Rams added another run in the third inning, but the ThunderWolves took the lead in the fourth for good. CSU-Pueblo got five runs in the inning as the Rams made four errors on four consecutive plays.
ASU got an unearned run of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning, but really began their comeback in the bottom half of the seventh inning.
Henshaw led off the rally with a walk, reaching base for the fourth time on the night, and Mathiowetz and Michael Urquidi followed with back-to-back singles to score Henshaw.
Urquidi then stole second and catcher Alex Salcido singled to center field to score Mathiowetz. Elias Aguirre followed with a walk, as did Boston and Henshaw came back up. He was hit by yet another pitch to bring Aguirre in, cutting the Ram deficit to just one run.
Mathiowetz came to the plate with a chance to tie the game or take lead, but was called out on strikes. Brooks argued, and was tossed from the game by the home plate umpire.
The Rams came close to tying the game again in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with no outs, but a strikeout from Boston and a double play from Henshaw secured the victory for the ThunderWolves.
ASU will have three more chances to take down CSU-Pueblo this weekend, playing a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. and playing the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
