SAN ANGELOÂ - The Angelo State baseball team shut out Colorado State-Pueblo 10-0 Sunday afternoon at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium to clinch a split in the series.
The Rams (9-5) had Carson Childers and Trent Baker combine for a two-hit shutout on the mound while striking out 14 total Thuderwolves (8-5) on the day.
"Carson did what he's done all year and whe you give up just two hits it makes it hard to lose," Angelo State head baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "And then Trent Baker came in and was just dominant for three innings and those guys just set the tone and everybody else followed behind."
Childers set the tone for the day early, striking out the first batter he saw, walking a batter and then striking out another pair of hitters.
The ASU offense went ahead and gave Childers a lead in the first inning as well. Michael Urquidi hit a one-out single through the right side to begin the run-scoring and Bradley Mathiowetz followed with a single of his own.
Nicholas Novak was hit by a pitch to load the bases with still just one out, and Jacob Boston promptly cleared them with a double to the wall in right center field.
Urquidi then helped the Rams tack on another run in the third inning when he doubled to lead off. One batter later, Novak doubled as well and Urquidi came in to score his second run of the day.
Overall, Urquidi reached base three of the four times he came to the plate and scored all three times. The El Paso native is now batting a team-second .362 on the year and leading the team with 14 runs scored.
His third time to score came in the fifth inning as he walked to lead off and quickly got into scoring position by stealing second and third base. He scored on a groundout from Novak.
The Rams broke the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth inning as the first three ASU batters walked. Two then came around to score on wild pitches, and a double from Jonathan Soberanes pushed the lead to 8-0.
Urquidi drove in the final run of the inning with a groundout to complete his impressive day at the plate.
The sixth inning also marked the final one on the mound for ASU starter Childers. The redshirt freshman struck out seven batters while giving up just one hit.
Trent Baker came in to start the seventh inning on the mound for Angelo State and began a strong outing by striking out the first three batters he faced.
Baker shut out the ThunderWolves again in the eighth, and the Rams rewarded him with the 10th and final run of the game.
Elias Aguirre hit a one-out single and advanced to third on a single from Trevor Moses. Aguirre then came in to score as Parker Tadlock earned collected his first career base hit with a single to right field.
Baker shut the door in the ninth with another two strikeouts to bring his total to seven and earn his first collegiate save.
The Rams will be on the road next, taking on Eastern New Mexico Friday through Sunday in Portales, New Mexico.
