WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team fell to Midwestern State, 88-78, on the road Saturday evening.
Despite leading the Mustangs in points off of turnovers (18-9), second chance points (13-4) and points off the bench 44-32), the Rams slide to 16 -6 overall and 7-5 in the Lone Star Conference. Marking his sixth game with at least 20 points, Ja'Michael Brown led the way as he dropped in 25 for the game. Also recording double-digit points for the game, both Brandon Williams (14 points, 11 boards) and Ran Tut (12 points, 10 boards) inked double-doubles. This marked Tut's first double-double of the season, while Williams also added a team leading four steals to aid the defense. Midwestern State climbs to 9-14, 5-8 LSC with the victory.
ASU would start slow as it fell behind 10-2 after Daron Mims opened the game with a jumper. However, a William Tchiengang layup in the paint got the Rams back into it as ASU began to chip away at the Mustang lead. At the 11:17 mark in the first half, Will Alder stroked a 3-pointer to place Angelo State with in one (14-15). A fast break layup by Brown would quickly set the Rams back into the lead with 10:38 left in the half.
With 6:10 on the clock, a steal by Antonio Singleton led to a fastbreak layup by Tut. This would give ASU its largest lead of the half with 30-24 on the board. The Mustangs responded and embarked on a pair of runs that would place them back in front by double-digits. The two teams then entered the break with ASU trailing by 11 points (45-34).
MSU opened the second half building off its momentum as it maintained its double-figure lead through the 13:10 mark. This is when Brown would sink a 3-ball from deep and cut the lead back into single –digit range. A pair of free throws from Singleton followed by a James Kirksey layup continued to cut the lead down to five points (57-52) with 11:57 left in the game.
The Rams continued to exchange points with the opposition, until MSU pushed its lead back to double-digits (73-63) with 3:15 left in the game. Angelo State would then be unable to fully recover and pull off a late game rally as it has done several times before this season.
Angelo State return to San Angelo for a two game home stand against Texas A&M – Commerce and Tarleton State. The Rams will get the week started with the Lions on Thursday, February 8 at 7:30 p.m. It will then play host to the Texans on Saturday, February 10 at 4 p.m. Â
