CANYON – The Angelo State baseball team was run-ruled 19-9 Sunday afternoon by West Texas A&M, ending the four-game road series with a split.
The Rams gave up 19 runs on 21 hits, including 15 runs in the third inning alone. The 19 runs allowed were tied for the fifth most in a single game in Angelo State program history.
"I thought we still competed well," Angelo State head baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "We got off to the good start, and Logan Teske's outing was a big positive for his first collegiate outing. He answered the bell, and we're going to need some more guys to do that as we move forward in the season."
ASU started off the game well enough, jumping out in front with four runs in the top half of the first inning.
Michael Urquidi led off with a single and was quickly bunted to second by Jonathan Soberanes. Andrew Morales and Jacob Boston both followed with singles, scoring Urquidi. One batter later, the two also came home as designated hitter Trevor Moses blasted a homer over the left field wall. It was the first of his career and put the Rams out in front 4-0.
WT got two of the runs back in the bottom half of the inning, as Cole Brandon started the game for the Rams, but Brandon ended the threat after that.
Neither team scored in the second, but the Buffs broke the game open in the bottom half of the third. West Texas A&M sent 21 total batters up to the plate during the inning to face four different Ram pitchers, scoring 15 straight runs before ASU was finally able to get back in the dugout.
ASU got the first two batters on base in the top of the fourth, but was unable to chip away from the lead in the inning, and the Buffs added two more runs in the bottom half to push the lead to 19-4.
The Rams did not get runs again in the fifth, and freshman Logan Teske came into pitch the bottom of the inning, making his first ever collegiate appearance. Teske allowed just one hit during 1.2 innings on the mound and struck out a batter as well.
Angelo State finally got on the board again in the top of the sixth inning. The Rams batted around, using only singles to score five runs and cut the deficit to just 10 before the Buffs cut the rally short.
ASU could not add another run in the seventh, enacting the run rule and sealing the victory for the Buffs.
The Rams will be on the road again next weekend, beginning LSC play with a four-game set against Cameron Friday through Sunday in Lawton, Oklahoma.
