Rams Begin LSC Play With Road Trip to Cameron

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State baseball team will be on the road again this weekend, kicking off Lone Star Conference play against Cameron in Lawton, Oklahoma.

The Rams (19-7, 0-0 LSC) are batting above .300 as a team, with a staff ERA of just 3.60 while ranking No. 2 in the nation with 73 stolen bases.

ASU also ranks in the top 25 nationally in walks (No. 6), double plays (No. 7), on-base percentage (No. 17), runs (No. 23), shutouts (No. 10), and WHIP (No. 9).

Leading the team in the bag-stealing department is junior outfielder Michael Urquidi, who has been successful on 19 stolen bases this season. Urquidi is also batting .348 on the year, which is third best on the team, scoring 30 runs and driving in 21.

Two other Rams have already reached the double-digit steal mark this season in Nicholas Novak, who has 12 and Jonathan Soberanes who has 15. Novak is the leading hitter for the Rams this season, batting .402 and has reached base at a .500 clip. Soberanes has seen his batting average drop in recent weeks, but still leads the team with 24 walks and is reaching base more than 45 percent of the time.

Four other Angelo State players are currently batting above .300. Parker Bramlett has played every spot in the infield except first this season with a .359 average and a .500 on-base percentage. Andrew Morales is hitting .341 as the Rams' regular first basemen and has driven in 21 runs.

Jacob Boston is the ASU home run leader and doubles leader with three and nine, respectively, while batting .341. Bradley Mathiowetz is the last of the .300-hitting group with an average of exactly .300. Mathiowetz has also double six times and driven in 13 runs.

Alex Salcido, Mitch Henshaw and Elias Aguirre have all started consistently for the Rams this season as well. Salcido is hitting .280 with 32 total bases. Henshaw has reached base at a .412 clip, and Aguirre has scored 17 times.

Other contributors to the Ram offense have included Trevor Moses, who has five RBI in 10 games played and Joe Scott Pace, who has started four times and is hitting .333.

On the mound, Angelo State has consistently used Tyler Lesley, Shane Browning and Trent Baker in the starting role.

Baker had the best performance last weekend as the Rams split a road series with West Texas A&M and earned LSC Pitcher of the week honors for his outing. The freshman was dominant in his game three start against West Texas A&M as the Rams won 4-2. He struck out seven batters while allowing just two hits and one earned run during his time on the mound, limiting the Buffs to just a .111 batting average overall. He now has 32 strikeouts on the year, which is tied for the second most on the team.

Baker marks the third Ram pitcher to win the award this season as Tyler Lesley won it twice and Carson Childers won it once. Lesley has posted a 2.31 ERA for the year and leads the team in strikeouts with 35.

Browning has had a strong season as well, allowing an opponent's batting average of just .271 and striking out 29 hitters on the year.

Cole Brandon has made three starts this season with a 3.38 ERA in 24 innings pitched. He has one win and a pair of saves.

The ASU and LSC save leader is Kellen Rholl, with five. His total also ranks No. 10 in the nation. Rholl has a team-leading 13 appearances on the season and has struck out 25 batters in that time.

Other contributors out of the ASU bullpen include Shannon Broussard, Logan Voth, Josh Barnett, Jared Velasco and Logan Teske.

Broussard  and Voth have both posted identical 4.91 ERAs this season, while Broussard has 10 strikeouts and Voth has four. Barnett has made a team-second 10 appearances and limited opponents to just a .208 batting average. Velasco has one win and one save on the year in nine appearances while striking out 10 batters.

Teske made his first collegiate appearance in the finale against West Texas A&M and threw 1.2 shutout innings against the Buffs while striking out one batter.

Cameron comes into the series with a 10-13 record. The Aggies dropped three of four games last weekend to Texas A&M-Kingsville and rank second to last in the LSC in both team batting average (.260) and staff ERA (6.49).

Game one of the series will start at 3 p.m. on Friday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
