LAWTON, Oklahoma – The Angelo State baseball team put together a strong offensive performance in Friday's Lone Start Conference opener with a 13-8 win over Cameron.
The Rams (20-7, 1-0 LSC) blasted four home runs against the Aggies (10-14, 0-1 LSC), tying for the eighth most in a single game in program history.
"I didn't really feel like we showed up ready to play today and we were lucky to get some balls up in the air and have them go out of the ballpark," Angelo State head baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "I thought Bradley Mathiowetz did a really good job of getting us going in the fourth and Mitch Henshaw had a good game too."
Although they ended up scoring 13 runs in the game, ASU was unable to drive in runners in scoring position in both the first and second innings. Cameron capitalized by jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second. They then added another run in the third to go up 4-0.
In the top of the fourth, Angelo State quickly tied the game back up. Bradley Mathiowetz led off the inning with a double, and Alex Salcido reached base to follow. Mitch Henshaw then cleared the bases and scored himself, blasting a three-run home run to left field.
Henshaw had his best game of the season against the Aggies, going 4-4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBI. The senior also score two runs and reached base via a hit-by-pitch.
Later in the inning, the Rams tied the game as Trevor Moses hit a home run of his own. It was the redshirt freshman's second home run in as many games.
In the fifth, the Rams took the lead for good. Mathiowetz sparked the run-scoring effort again, hitting a one-out single through the left side. Then with two outs, Henshaw singled and Mathiowetz to third. Mathiowetz then came in to score on a single from Elias Aguirre to give ASU the lead.
Michael Urquidi came to the plate next in the inning and quickly deposited the Rams' third home run of the day over the right field fence to push the lead to 8-4.
Taking the lead in the fourth allowed the win in the game to go to Ram starter Tyler Lesley. The San Antonio native pitched six innings while striking out seven batters and earning his LSC-leading seventh win of the year.
The home runs kept coming in the sixth inning. Andrew Morales led off with a single, but did not spend much time on base. The next batter, Jacob Boston, took one pitch before blasting a home run to left field. It was Boston's fourth homer of the season, which leads the team.
Angelo State continued to pour on the runs, as Morales drove in Nicholas Novak with an RBI single in the seventh. Doubles from Henshaw and Aguirre in the eighth drove in another pair of runs.
Lesley was relieved in the bottom half of the seven by freshman Logan Teske, who made just his second collegiate appearance. Teske faced just three batters, striking out one.
The Aggies tried to claw back into the contest with a pair of runs in the eighth and even loaded the bases in the ninth, but Kellen Rholl stopped the rally to secure the ASU victory.
Angelo State will face off with Cameron three more times this weekend, playing a doubleheader at 1 p.m. on Saturday before the series finale on Sunday at 3 p.m. Both games of Saturday's doubleheader will be broadcast locally on 1260 KKSA and AngeloSports.com with
