SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State baseball team lost a pair of games Saturday, losing 9-4 and 11-4 to Eastern New Mexico at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
The Rams (27-14, 8-7 LSC) left 17 runners on base in the two games combined walking 13 Greyhound batters on the day.
"There's just not much you can say after a day like this," Angelo State head baseball coach Kevin Brooks said. "We didn't get quality starts from our pitchers and left a whole lot of runners on base. We're going to have to figure some things out and just get a lot tougher."
ASU started off the day well enough in game one, giving up a run in the first inning, but quickly got on top with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Mitch Henshaw with one out to get the rally going and quickly came in to score on a triple from Jacob Boston. Boston then scored on a single from Elias Aguirre.
Eastern New Mexico got back on top with three runs in the top half of the fourth inning, taking a 4-2 lead, forcing ASU to rally once again. It was Henshaw and Boston who did the scoring again in the bottom half of the fourth.
Henshaw got one run back on his own with a solo home run of the scoreboard in right center field. Boston then followed with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a balk. He scored on an infield single from Joe Scott Pace.
The Greyhounds responded again in the top half of the fifth, sending eight batters to the plate to score four runs and take the lead for good. They added one more run in the top of the seventh for insurance, and the Rams went down 9-4 in game one of the doubleheader.
In game two, Angelo State sent freshman Trent Baker to the mound. Baker worked scoreless frames in the first and second innings but fell into an early hole in the third inning as ENMU struck for four runs.
The Rams were unable to strike back, and the Greyhounds added another run in the fifth. Henshaw and Boston teamed up again to score the Rams' first run of the game in the bottom half of the fourth as Henshaw walked and Boston singled him home. ASu would do no further damage in the inning.
Eastern New Mexico continued to pour on in the fifth, adding another two runs to push the lead back out to six runs.
ASU fought back in the bottom half of the inning as Parker Bramlett singled home Michael Urquidi and Pace. The Rams continued to rally and loaded the bases with just one out, bringing the tying run to the plate in the form of Boston. The third basemen struck out, however, and a groundout from Andrew Morales ended the threat.
The Greyhounds added another four runs in the sixth inning off Ram reliever Logan Teske, building their largest lead of the weekend at 11-3.
ASU would not be able to respond in the sixth and after scoring just one run in the seventh dropped their second straight game.
The Rams will attempt to salvage the series with a split on Sunday, taking on the Greyhounds in the series finale at 1 p.m. at Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium.
