Rams Travel to Kingsville For LSC Matchup

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State baseball team will be on the road this weekend for a four game series against Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday through Sunday.

The Rams (25-9, 6-2 LSC) will open the series at 6 p.m. Friday followed by a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday and the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

ASU is coming off a series win over Tarleton State last weekend that saw dominant performances from Tyler Lesley and Bradley Mathiowetz who took home Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Week and Hitter of the Week, respectively.

In his start against Tarleton, Lesley went seven innings with seven strikeouts and allowed just one batter to get into scoring position on the night. For the season the San Antonio native is tied for the most wins nationally with eight and also ranks No. 18 in WHIP for the season. He has posted a 2.26 ERA this year and leads the Rams with 49 strikeouts.

Mathiowetz had a strong weekend at the plate, reaching base in all four games he played while leading the team in doubles, RBI and total bases. He capped off the weekend with a  5-5 performance that included a walk, four runs scored and a grand slam to drive in four runs.

The Minnesota native is hitting .340 for the year with nine doubles and two home runs while reaching base at a .424 clip. His performance also earned him Hitter of the Week honors in the South Central Region from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

Mathiowetz is not the only Ram to post strong numbers at the plate so far this season though. Six other ASU hitters are hitting better than .300 for the season.

Infielder Parker Bramlett leads the way with a .431 average. He has played in 29 games and started 15 times, scoring 18 runs and reaching base at a .567 clip.

Nicholas Novak has had a stellar sophomore season at the plate with a .370 batting average in 31 starts. He is tied for first on the team with four home runs and is second with 33 runs driven in.

Andrew Morales and Jacob Boston are also hitting above the .300 mark this year as Morales has a .344 average and Boston has hit .333. Morales has the second most hits on the team with 42, while Boston leads the team with 36 RBI.

Jonathan Soberanes and Alex Salcido are sitting just below the .300 mark with batting averages at .279 and .260, respectively. Soberanes is second on the team with 18 stolen bases, while Salcido has scored 19 times this season.

Other Rams contributing have included Mitch Henshaw, Elias Aguirre and Joe Scott Pace.

On the mound, the Rams have consistently used Lesley, Shane Browning and Trent Baker.

Browning has posted a 4.70 ERA this season and is second on the team in strikeouts. Baker is just in his freshman campaign, but has only taken one loss to four wins. He has a 1.87 ERA and has limited opponents to a .143 batting average.

Out of the bullpen, ASU has seen significant contributions from Kellen Rholl, Cole Brandon, Shannon Broussard, Josh Barnett and Logan Teske.

Rholl is the ASU leader in appearances on the mound and has a 2.79 ERA in 19.1 innings. Brandon has started and relieved, posting a 3.69 ERA and striking out 29 batters this season.
