Rams use big second half to advance to LSC semifinals

FRISCO – The Angelo State men's basketball team used a big run at the beginning of the second half to pull ahead of Texas A&M-Kingsville and went on to defeat the Javelinas 83-76. With the win, the Rams advance to the Lone Star Conference tournament semifinals and move to 21-7 on the season.

Sophomore Paul Williams led the Rams with a season and career high 23 points, making five of seven shots from the field and 12-13 free throws. He was joined in double figures by Daron Mims, who had 17 points while making 6-11 shots from the field and 2-3 from three point range. Kiair Crouch had 15 points and Ronald Bell had 11 for ASU, while Bell grabbed a game high 16 rebounds, including five on the offensive end. This marked the second straight game that Bell had 16 boards.

As the matchups were both previous times with Kingsville, the game seesawed back and forth in the first half, with neither team able to get out to much of a lead. An Alex Mills floater at the first half buzzer got the Javelinas within 36-34 at the break. After halftime, the story was entirely different. The Rams scored the first eight points of the second half to grab a ten point lead. The lead got up to as much as 19 points in the second half on two made free throws by Paul Williams. Although the Javelinas eventually narrowed the lead to 66-61, ASU did what they needed to down the stretch and coasted to the finish line, with the final points fittingly coming on two more free throws by Williams.

For the game, the Rams held TAMUK to 40 percent from the field, 23 percent from the three point line, and 55 percent from the free throw line.

The Rams will be in action again Saturday at noon as they will take on Texas A&M-Commerce.
