SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team has had tremendous success on the court over the years and that has not only led to many opportunities for the student-athletes, but also the coaches who have come through.
"Here in our program at ASU since 2013, we take the job of assisting not only our players but our young coaches, in advancing in their careers," said Rams Head Coach
Cinco Boone. "It is well known within our industry that full-time positions are difficult to get. We hope to be able to reward our coaches for their hard work and sacrifices within our program by recommending them for full-time coaching positions at the particular level they want to be at. These guys work long hours for little pay, and sometimes no pay, just to get their foot in the door at this level. We are proud to recognize the success of our former coaches."
Starting in the springtime of 2021, a number of assistant and graduate assistant coaches have gone on to further their coaching careers after starting with the Rams. Below is a list of some of the coaches:
- The Rams had three graduate assistants from 2019-20 who from April to September of 2021 got full time jobs in a variety of levels of basketball. The first of the three, Jarrett Clifton was hired by Bossier Parrish Community College in Bossier City, Louisiana. Bossier Parrish Community College plays in one of the toughest junior college regions in the country, Region XIV (also known as Texas Eastern Conference). Clifton was hired by head coach, J.A. Anglin, a 2016 Under Armour 30-Under-30 recipient.
- Mike Lopez, a 2014 participant in the Skip Priess All Star Game hosted by Angelo State, was the second graduate assistant that found an assistant coaching/teaching position this past summer. He was hired as an assistant boy's coach at Central Heights High School in Nacogdoches, Texas under AD and head boy's basketball coach, Kevin Herron.
- After nearly two and half years with ASU Rams, Logan Power was hired in September by the Indiana Pacers, where he will work as player development assistant coach. He will work under former Dallas Mavericks head coach, Rick Carlisle. He spent quality time in July at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, Nevada with numerous of David Lewis' NBA connects and it helped him land his gig with the Pacers.
- From 2014-2020, Kevin Kaerwer served on the basketball staff as a graduate assistant and also a full-time assistant coach before becoming an assistant coach at New Mexico Junior College, and just got hired in August of 2021 for player development at Division 1, University of Texas-El Paso. He works for head coach, Joe Golding, who is the former Abilene Christian University coach. Coach Golding also served as the MC for An Evening with Chris Beard, an event ASU hosted in October of 2019.
- Clint Galyean was at ASU from 2013-2017 before earning a full-time coaching spot at Central Baptist College under former ASU assistant coach, Chris Wright. Later he was promoted to head coach while leading his team to three national tournament appearances. In August, Galyean took the head coaching job at Wayland Baptist University.
- Anthony Johnson was a graduate assistant from 2017-18 before joining the staff at Texas Tech University, helping the Red Raiders to a run in the 2018-19 NCAA National Championship game. He has had coaching stops at College of Charleston, Georgia Southern, and in summer of 2021 he got hired as an assistant coach at Division I, USC Upstate.
- Over the summer, former graduate assistant Brock Kimball was named an assistant coach for Division I Morehead State's women's basketball program. Between his stops at ASU and Morehead State, he was an assistant women's coach at South Plains College and head women's coach at Northwest Kansas Technical College.
Some other notable former ASU assistant or graduate assistant coaches who are currently still in college or professional basketball are Chris Wright (head coach at Talladega College), Preston Ingram (head coach at Missouri Baptist University), Max Lefevre (player development with Minnesota Timberwolves), and Jeff Barr (assistant coach at Collin County Community College). Additionally, some other former graduate assistant coaches who have moved on to other successful endeavors are Peter Kiganya, Hunter Cottle, Travares Peterson, Ben Solesbee, Addison Herbert, Kyle Vasher, Justin Hales, Chris Shackelford, Barry Derickson, Rhett Sheibley, Justin Hales, Roger Copland, Tommy Woolridge, and Bryan Hammond (assistant boy's basketball coach for 2021 4A Louisiana State Champs).
"As you can see from the list, these levels range from high school to all levels of college basketball and all the way up to the NBA," added Coach Boone. "Several of our former coaches have just recently moved up and we wanted to recognize them. We are proud of what all of them are accomplishing and we think it is awesome to have Angelo State University represented so well all over the United States. They put in a lot of work here at ASU and we appreciate all of them that have come through our program in the last eight plus years."
