SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team looks to continue their good form this season as they go on the road for their first two conference away games; the Rams face UAFS on Thursday night before ending their weekend against Oklahoma Christian on Saturday afternoon.
The Rams are 5-1 on the season and are coming off a perfect 4-0 homestand which saw them take care of Arlington Baptist and Sul Ross State before defeating Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas A&M International last weekend to open conference play.
As a team, the Rams score 78.7 points per game on 44.6 percent shooting from the floor; they also shoot 74.6 percent from the free-throw line and 33.1 percent from three-point range.
The Rams lead the conference in two team categories – rebound margin and steals. Having out-rebounded opponents in every game this season, the Rams grab 10.3 more rebounds per game than their opposition, which is the tenth-best mark in Division II; the Rams also grab 10.5 steals per game, 12
th-best in the country.
The Rams' offense has been led by three players this season –
Kevon Godwin,
Reggie Quezada, and
Fredelin De La Cruz – averaging ten or more points. Godwin and De La Cruz are the current Lone Star Conference Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for their performances last weekend. Godwin led the conference in scoring (25.0 points per game) and grabbed three steals, while De La Cruz averaged 8.5 points and 8.5 rebounds and blocked three shots in the Rams' perfect weekend.
Godwin leads the team with 17.2 points per game while averaging 2.2 steals per game. The Floridian is shooting 40 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from three-point range.
Quezada scores 15.8 points per game and leads the teams with 3.1 assists a game; De La Cruz averages 10.0 points per game, grabs 9.3 boards per game, and has recorded a conference-best three double-doubles this season.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
UAFS is 4-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, dropping road games to West Texas A&M and Lubbock Christian this past weekend.
The Lions score 69.3 points per game while allowing 69.4 points per game this season; as a team, they shoot 43.5 percent from the field.
Payton Brown leads the conference in scoring with 21.1 points per game. The redshirt freshman has two 30-point performances this season, scoring 33 in an overtime game versus MSU Denver and 39 against Ouachita Baptist.
The Rams are 3-1 all-time against the Lions and 1-1 in Fort Smith; last season, the Rams claimed a 70-66 victory over the Lions.
SCOUTING THE EAGLES
Oklahoma Christian is 4-3 on the season and 0-2 in conference play, suffering losses on the road to Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M.
The Eagles score 79.1 points per game while allowing opponents to score 70 points per contest; they shoot 47.6 percent from the field and 35 percent from three.
Drew Tennial averages 19.4 points per game, third-best in the LSC. The junior has scored at least 13 points in each contest this season; Tennial scored 26 points against Black Hills State and 28 points against West Texas A&M, two nationally-ranked opponents.
The Rams are undefeated against the Eagles in four meetings; last season, the Rams took home a 91-79 victory over the Eagles in Oklahoma City.
Following this weekend, the Rams stay on the road and head to Las Vegas for the Las Vegas Holiday Hoops Classic on December 17
th and 18
th.
