LAREDO, Texas – After a long trip to Laredo, the Angelo State women's soccer team battled their way to a 1-0 victory Wednesday evening, claiming their first win in the conference schedule.
The Rambelles improve to 6-0-1 on the season and are now 1-0-0 in Lone Star Conference action. Texas A&M International falls to 3-3-0 on the season and 0-1-0 in LSC action.
In what was a similar contest to the Belles previous match against Fort Lewis, the team came out firing. Shots by
Reagan Urbany,
Mariah Griffin, and
Katelin Heise were all blocked before Heise was able to get one on target, forcing a save from the Dustdevils keeper.
The Belles would accumulate seven shots in the first half; the Dustdevils took three, forcing
Kira Miller to make one save in the opening stanza.
"Our passing wasn't very good today, we didn't keep the ball well and that is something TAMIU is very good at," said Belles Head Coach
Travis McCorkle. "We had some good chances, but we were able to win this game behind our defense."
The second half would begin much like the first with the Belles firing away. Shots from
Cindy Rodriguez and
Grace Jordan were blocked, while midfielder
Madison Stokes had an opportunity that missed high.
Valerie Solis was then able to find the breakthrough in the 72
nd minute courtesy of an assist from freshman
Hadley Coronado.
Miller would be forced to make two saves in the second half, earning her fourth shutout in 2022. "Kira (Miller) probably made the defensive play of the game there with about 40 second left," said McCorkle. "Her alertness to come out and close the angle forcing the player wide allowed us to go and close out the game."
The Belles would finish the contest with 14 shots, only three on goal while limiting TAMIU to six shots with three of those on target.
The Blue and Gold will be back in action at home on Saturday, Sept. 17
th to face Oklahoma Christian in an LSC bout slated for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
