SAN ANGELO – Coming off a tight, emotional 75-72 victory over UT Permian Basin last night in Odessa, the Angelo State men's basketball team faces a quick turnaround this week to host Eastern New Mexico on Thursday before ending their weekend with Western New Mexico on Saturday.
Kevon Godwin's 30 points propelled the Rams' win last night; it was the second time Godwin has scored 30 or more points in a game this season.
The Rams are 16-3 on the season and 12-1 in conference play; this marks Angelo State's best start since 2015-16 when the Rams started with a 16-3 record. The Rams' 12-1 Lone Star Conference record is also their best start to conference play in the program's history.
After last night's performance, Godwin moved himself up to third in the conference in scoring this season, averaging 17.6 points per game.
Godwin also leads the conference in three-point shooting percentage (41.9 percent) and three-pointers made per game (2.8).
Steve Webb ranks second in the conference with 1.8 steals per contest while teammate
Fredelin De La Cruz is sixth in the conference with 7.0 rebounds per game.
Against the Greyhounds on January 1st,
Willie Guy led Angelo State in scoring with 18 points, De La Cruz scored 12 points, and
Barlow Alleruzzo IV scored 11 points. The Rams struggled from the field that night, only shooting 36.2 percent and 21.2 percent from deep.
Against the Mustangs on December 30
th, Quezada powered the Rams' offense with 16 points and eight rebounds; Alleruzzo scored 14, and De La Cruz added 12 points and eight rebounds.
Following this weekend, Angelo State kicks off a four-game road trip, starting with Lubbock Christian and West Texas A&M next weekend.
SCOUTING THE GREYHOUNDS
Eastern New Mexico is 12-6 overall on the season and 7-5 in conference play; they are coming off a pair of wins last weekend against Texas A&M International and Texas A&M-Kingsville.
A perfect 10-0 on their home court, they are only 2-5 on the road this season.
Last weekend, Greyhounds' big man Jose Murillo blocked seven shots, grabbed 13 rebounds, and held the Dustdevils and the Javelinas to 33.3 shooting from the field.
The Rams' last loss came against the Greyhounds in Portales on January 1
st, 80-70. In that game, Angelo State only shot 36.2 percent from the field and 21.2 percent from three-point range, and the Greyhounds never trailed the Rams during that contest.
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Western New Mexico is 10-8 on the season and 4-8 in LSC play; they lost both games last weekend to the Javelinas and Dustdevils.
The Mustangs are 4-4 on the road this season; in their last road game, they defeated Lubbock Christian in Lubbock for the first time in program history.
On December 30
th, Angelo State pulled out a 77-63 win over the Mustangs in Silver City.
