Lubbock, Texas – The first game of the series between the Angelo State baseball team and Lubbock Christian saw the third-ranked Rams fall into an eight-run deficit after six innings on Friday night at Hays Field; however, the Rams rode great pitching from
Scott Ellis and timely hitting from a lineup that tallied 16 hits to outscore the Chaps 10-1 in the final five innings to win 14-13 in 11 innings of play.
The win is the first for the Rams in extra innings since they beat St. Edward's in ten innings on April 1
st of last season.
The Rams held a 4-3 lead through four innings of play, with the runs coming courtesy of a
Jordan Williams single, a two-RBI
Thomas Cain single, and a
Justin Harris double.
The bottom of the fifth saw the Chaps strike for eight runs on six hits and four walks; five of the eight runs came with two outs in the inning. The hosts would tack on another run in the sixth to make it 12-4.
Jacob Guerrero led the seventh off with a double before scoring on a
Tripp Clark single.
Weston Valasek would hit a three-run home run to bring the score to 12-8.
After the Chaps pushed across a run in the bottom of the seventh, the Rams would strike for four more runs in the eighth, with
Austin Beck leading off the inning with a double before scoring on a groundout. Clark homered, and
Kamden Kelton drove in two runs on a single to bring the Rams within a single run.
Beck would lead off the ninth inning with a home run down the left-field line to tie the game at 13-all; the Rams would load the bases in the 11
th inning, scoring the winning run on a
Jordan Williams sacrifice fly.
Williams went 3-for6 from the plate while Clark,
Thomas Cain, Kelton, Beck, and Guerrero each recorded two hits.
Ellis collected his fourth win this season, throwing the final 4.2 innings for the Rams. Ellis held the Chaps to two hits, two walks, and no runs to enable the Rams' comeback; the Bakersfield, California, product struck out seven batters.
Aaron Munson started the game on the mound for the Rams, pitching the first 4.2 innings; he was relieved by
Caleb Heuertz, who threw the subsequent 1.2 innings.
The Rams improve to 27-4 on the season and 25-4 in LSC play; they are back in action against the Chaps tomorrow, with the doubleheader scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
