Rams’ Godwin, Embery-Simpson Named to Bevo Francis Top 100 List

Kansas City, Mo. – Angelo State senior guard Kevon Godwin and graduate student guard Keyshawn Embery-Simpson were named to the Bevo Francis Top 100 Watch List, which the National Awards Committee and Small College Basketball announced this afternoon.

The Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award is presented annually to the player with the finest overall season in Small College Basketball. Considerations will be season statistics, individual achievements, awards, personal character, and team achievements. This is an incredibly prestigious award, as it will only be given to one player within Small College Basketball per season (Division II, Division III, NAIA, USCAA, and NCCAA).

This is the second time the Rams have ever had a nominee for the Bevo Francis Award and the first since Tre Bennett was named to the top 100 back in 2016.

Angelo State is one of eight programs overall and one of five Division II programs to have more than one nominee, joining Lincoln Memorial (Division II), North Georgia (Division II), Central Oklahoma (Division II), Nova Southeastern (Division II), Lourdes (NAIA), Langston (NAIA), and Morningside (NAIA).

The Rams' duo are two of five players from the LSC and two of six players from the South Central Region to appear on the list.

Godwin averages 17.1 points per game, seventh in the LSC, on 45.3 percent shooting from the field and 42.9 percent from three. He ranks fourth in the conference with 4.5 assists per game. The LSC Preseason Player of the Year, Godwin was an All-LSC First Team selection a year ago, as well as receiving all-region honors from the D2CCA and the NABC.

After receiving four LSC Player of the Week awards last season, the Interdisciplinary Studies major has picked up two more this season, one on offense and one on defense, becoming the first player in the league to win both awards this season.

Embery-Simpson has made an immediate impact upon his arrival in San Angelo, as he leads the team in scoring with 18.9 points per game, which is fifth-best in the league. He shoots 44.6 percent from three-point range this season and makes 3.5 threes per contest, both of which are second in the LSC.'

The Criminal Justice student scored 30 points in his debut as the Rams defeated No. 15 Fort Lewis; he topped that number this past Saturday as he scored a career-high 36 points on 12-of-20 shooting from the field and 7-of-13 shooting from three. Embery-Simpson was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week back on December 18th for averaging 18.5 points in a week where the Rams picked up a pair of wins.

On February 15th, the Bevo Francis Watch List will be reduced to the Top 50 players. One month later, on March 15th, the Top 25 players will be announced. The finalists and Bevo Francis Award winner announcement release date is TBD. More information will be available in the coming months.
