Rams Embark on Road Trip to Take on Greyhounds, Mustangs

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State men's basketball team is back on the road this weekend as they travel to the Land of Enchantment to take on Eastern New Mexico on Thursday night and Western New Mexico on Saturday afternoon. 

LAST TIME OUT IN RAMS BASKETBALL
The Rams returned home last weekend, and with that, returned to the win column following a four-game skid. The Rams defeated St. Mary's 111-89 as the Rams made 17 threes. Kevon Godwin scored 28 points while Keyshawn Embery-Simpson added in 22. Against St. Edward's, the Rams prevailed 69-64, with Embery-Simpson led the way with 19 points. 

PATEL NAMED NATIONAL DII COACH OF THE WEEK
Rams Head Coach Vinay Patel was named the HoopsDirt.Com National DII Coach of the Week for leading the Rams to a 2-0 record this past weekend.

GODWIN CLOSING IN ON 1000 POINTS
Rams senior guard Kevon Godwin has 970 career points for the Rams, just 30 points away from becoming the 13th player in program history to reach the century mark in scoring and the first to do so since Paul Williams accomplished the milestone in the 2021-22 season. Godwin is also fourth in program history in threes made with 144, 36 off of Quay King's 180 made threes.

The Greyhounds are 12-6 on the season and 8-4 in conference play; they are currently sixth in the LSC standings, a half-game back of the Rams. They are 1-2 in their last three games, with all three games being decided by a total of five points. 

ENMU boasts the second-best scoring offense in the league, averaging 88.9 points per game, on a league-best 50.8 percent shooting from the field and 42.7 percent from three. Jahcoree Ealy leads the LSC with 21.8 points per game on 62 percent shootin from the field. 

The Greyhounds' defense allows 78.8 points per game as opponent shoot 41.7 percent from the field and 33.6 percent from three-point range against the Greyhounds. Jose Murillo is fourth in the league with 1.4 blocks per game, and teammate Conrad Luczynski is seventh with 1.3 rejections per contest. 

LAST TIME VS. ENMU
The Rams are 43-40 all-time versus the Greyhounds, having won 88-85 in the team's first matchup this season back on January 6th. The Greyhounds ripped off a 25-11 run in the game's final three minutes to turn a 17-point deficit into a three-point game in the end. Trey Farrer led the Rams with 21 points and Kevon Godwin added in 20 points, making four threes on the evening.

The Mustangs are 3-14 on the season and 1-11 in conference play; they have not won in 2024, having lost all eight of their games since the calendar flipped. The Mustangs are 0-6 on their home court this season and have lost each of those games by an average of 15.8 points per game. 

WNMU averages 71.5 points per game on 41.2 percent shooting. Cortaviaus Seales is sixth in the league with 17.9 points per game; he shoots 44.2 percent from the field. LaMarqus Merchant is tenth in the league with 3.8 assists per game. 

The Mustang defense concedes 81 points per game, second-worst in the LSC; opponents shoot 46.3 percent from the field against the Mustangs. However, the Mustangs boast the league's toughest three-point defense as opponents only shoot 31.6 percent beyond the arc against the Mustangs. 

LAST TIME VS. WNMU
The Rams are 13-4 all-time versus the Mustangs, having won 77-64 over the Mustangs on January 4th. The Rams held the Mustangs to 35.8 percent shooting from the field and 27.3 percent from three. Kevon Godwin and Keyshawn Embery-Simpson had 17 and 15 points, respectively, while Trey Farrer notched a 12-point, ten-rebound double-double versus the Mustangs.

PERSONAL BESTS THIS SEASON
  •     Twelve Rams have recorded at least one personal best this season.
  •     Guard Everson Armstrong scored six points against St. Mary's on Jan. 25.
  •     Forward DJ Basey set a new career-high with four blocks against Western New Mexico on Jan. 4 and tied his career-high of eight rebounds against Oklahoma Christian on Dec. 9; he attempted a career-high 12 field goals and tied his personal best of eight field goals made against ENMU on Jan. 6. 
  •     Forward Chris Boekhorst recorded his first-career assist against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 25; he made two shots against the Patriots, tying a career-high.
  •     Guard Kendrick Delahoussaye scored 14 points twice, doing so against Arlington Baptist and Lubbock Christian; he grabbed four rebounds versus Eastern New Mexico on Jan. 6 and assisted five times against LCU. 
  •     Guard Keyshawn Embery-Simpson scored a career-high 36 points for the Rams against LCU on Jan. 13. He went 12-for-20 from the field; he has made seven threes twice, doing so against West Liberty and LCU. Embery-Simpson also went 6-for-8 from the charity stripe against Cameron on Jan. 20, new career highs in free throw makes and attempts. 
  •     Forward Trey Farrer grabbed four steals in the Rams' double-overtime contest against MSU on Jan. 18.
  •     Forward DJ Freeman tied his personal best with 11 rebounds against UAFS on Dec. 7. 
  •     Guard Kevon Godwin tied his career high with seven assists twice this season, doing so against West Liberty and Eastern New Mexico. He also set a new career-high with seven steals versus Rollins on Dec. 17 and set a new personal best with eight threes made against St. Mary's on Jan. 25.
  •     Guard Willie Guy scored a career-high 20 points in the Rams' win over Oklahoma Christian on Dec. 9; he assisted a career-high nine times versus Western New Mexico on Jan. 4.
  •     Guard Jacob Richardson scored his first bucket against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 25; he also recorded his first career rebound, assist and block. He recorded his first steal versus Rollins on Dec. 17.  
  •     Forward Shemar Smith rejected a pair of shots in the Rams 101-98 win over No. 6 West Liberty on Dec. 18. 
  •     Guard Carvell Teasett grabbed a new personal best of six rebounds in the Rams' win over Eastern New Mexico on Jan. 6.
