Rams Hit the Road to Face No. 8 DBU, UTT

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State men's basketball team starts the first part of their final road trip of the season this week as they travel east to take on DBU on Thursday evening and UT Tyler on Saturday afternoon. 

LAST TIME OUT IN RAMS BASKETBALL
The Rams closed their home schedule with wins over Cameron and Midwestern State last week, defeating the Aggies 80-71 before taking down the Mustangs 92-87 in triple overtime. The Rams shot 57.9 percent from three against Cameron, with the trio of Keyshawn Embery-Simpson, Kevon Godwin, and Willie Guy shooting a combined 11-of-17 from three. Saturday, which was senior day, saw all five seniors in the starting lineup score in double figures. The triple-overtime win was the first for the Rams in program history; this season, they played five overtime periods against the Mustangs. 

EMBERY-SIMPSON NAMED LSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Keyshawn Embery-Simpson averaged 26 points and was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season. 

GODWIN CLIMBS UP CAREER SCORING LIST
Kevon Godwin became the 13th player in program history to score 1,000 points for the Blue and Gold. Godwin currently sits at 1,049 points, 11th in program history. He needs 13 points to pass Danny Sponhaltz (1965-68) to enter the top ten and another ten points to pass Laurin Prather (1965-70) to put himself into ninth place.

The Patriots are 21-3 overall on the season, and 15-3 in LSC play; they are 10-1 on their home court this season, with their lone loss in the Burg Center being a 104-94 defeat to Eastern New Mexico back on December 9th. The Patriots have already wrapped up the LSC East Division and are currently second in the overall LSC standings. 

One of the highest-paced offenses in the country, DBU averages 88.3 points per game on 48.2 percent shooting from the field and 35.4 percent shooting from three. Cameron Kahn is second in the LSC with 20 points per game and is also second with 58 percent shooting on field goals. 

The Patriots' defense allows 76.6 points per game; opponents shoot 47.9 percent from the field, the second-highest mark in the conference. DBU also owns the highest turnover margin in the league, leading the LSC with 10.6 steals per game. 

LAST TIME VS. DBU
The Rams are 2-4 all-time versus DBU, with both wins coming last season. ASU defeated DBU 71-57 on February 16th and defeated them 64-43 in the opening round of the LSC Tournament last season in Frisco. The Rams have never won in Dallas in their previous two attempts.

The Patriots are 3-21 on the season and 2-16 in LSC play, having lost their last five contests; they are 2-9 on their home court this season, last defeating UAFS back on January 6th for their last home win. 

UT Tyler scores 64.8 points per game, the lowest scoring average in the league. They shoot 41.8 percent from the field and 31.7 percent from three. Bryce Roberts leads the team with 13.5 points per game, and LCU transfer Alec Zambie leads the squad with six rebounds per game.

UTT's defense allows 72.2 points per game on 43.7 percent shooting; opponents shoot 36.8 percent from three, the second-highest mark in the LSC. The Patriots rank fifth in blocked shots per game, with 3.1 rejections per contest. Junior Juan Pablo Camargo averages 1.1 blocks per game. 

LAST TIME VS. UTT
The Rams are 3-0 all-time against the Patriots since UTT moved to Division II in 2018. The Rams have played in Tyler once, claiming an 88-82 win in January 2020. Last season, the Rams claimed a 70-64 victory over the Patriots on the Rams' senior day inside the Junell Center - Stephens Arena.

PERSONAL BESTS THIS SEASON
  •     Twelve Rams have recorded at least one personal best this season.
  •     Guard Everson Armstrong scored six points against St. Mary's on Jan. 25.
  •     Forward DJ Basey set a new career-high with four blocks against Western New Mexico on Jan. 4 and tied his career-high of eight rebounds against Oklahoma Christian on Dec. 9; he attempted a career-high 12 field goals and tied his personal best of eight field goals made against ENMU on Jan. 6. 
  •     Forward Chris Boekhorst recorded his first-career assist against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 25; he made two shots against the Patriots, tying a career-high.
  •     Guard Kendrick Delahoussaye scored 14 points twice, doing so against Arlington Baptist and Lubbock Christian; he grabbed four rebounds versus Eastern New Mexico on Jan. 6 and assisted five times against LCU. 
  •     Guard Keyshawn Embery-Simpson scored a career-high 37 points for the Rams against WNMU on Feb. 3. He has made seven threes twice, doing so against West Liberty and LCU. Embery-Simpson also went 10-of-10 from the charity stripe against WNMU on Feb. 3, a new career high in free throw makes and attempts. He blocked three shots on two occasions. 
  •     Forward Trey Farrer grabbed four steals in the Rams' double-overtime contest against MSU on Jan. 18.
  •     Forward DJ Freeman tied his personal best with 11 rebounds against UAFS on Dec. 7. 
  •     Guard Kevon Godwin tied his career high with seven assists twice this season, doing so against West Liberty and Eastern New Mexico. He also set a new career-high with seven steals versus Rollins on Dec. 17 and set a new personal best with eight threes made against St. Mary's on Jan. 25.
  •     Guard Willie Guy scored a career-high 21 points in the Rams' win over WNMU on Feb. 3; he assisted a career-high nine times versus Western New Mexico on Jan. 4. He grabbed eight rebounds against Cameron on Feb. 15. 
  •     Guard Jacob Richardson scored his first bucket against Arlington Baptist on Nov. 25; he also recorded his first career rebound, assist and block. He recorded his first steal versus Rollins on Dec. 17.  
  •     Forward Shemar Smith rejected a pair of shots in the Rams 101-98 win over No. 6 West Liberty on Dec. 18. 
  •     Guard Carvell Teasett grabbed a new personal best of six rebounds in the Rams' win over Eastern New Mexico on Jan. 6.
