Rams Host Cameron in First Home Series of the Season

SAN ANGELO, Texas - The top-ranked Angelo State baseball team will welcome the Cameron Aggies into Foster Field at 1st Community Credit Union Stadium for the first Lone Star Conference home series of the year beginning on Friday, Feb. 9.

LAST TIME OUT:
The Rams opened the 2023 season with a four-game split at Eastern New Mexico. Tripp Clark led the team at the plate with a .429 batting average while Justin Harris' two home runs puts him atop in OPS with a 1.318. On the mound, two starting pitchers for ASU, Dax Dathe & Alezeah Gutierez, did not give up a run.
 
SERIES HISTORY:

Last Meeting: Feb. 12, 2023: ASU, 15-4 – Cameron, Okla.
The Rams have won 22 of the last 24 matchups against the Aggies, holding a 59-14 overall record in the series. ASU is currently riding a 15-game win streak with Cameron's last win coming in May of 2019. The Rams average just over eight runs per game against CU and hold a 31-4 record at home.
 
SCOUTING THE AGGIES:
Cameron enters the weekend with a 0-4 overall record after being swept at home in their season-opening series against Lubbock Christian. The Aggies battled hard before falling to LCU 9-8 in game one. CU then dropped the next three by a combined score of 30-14 to end the weekend.
 
Lance Barnett and Spencer Simpson lead the way at the plate for the Aggies. Barnett holds a team-high 1.279 OPS with eight hits including two doubles and a triple while knocking in two. Spencer enters the weekend with a 1.038 OPS as he is one of three Aggies to hit a home run for CU thus far while earning a team-high five walks.

On the mound, Clayton McClenan allowed a lone run in 3.1 innings of work in relief. The Aggies hold a team ERA of 11.90 as they prepare to face the Rams.

PITCHING DEBUTS:
Five pitchers made their debut for the Blue and Gold against the Greyhounds:
- Dax Dathe started game one of Friday's doubleheader, where he struck out eight through 4.2 innings of shutout baseball.
- Clayton Broeder relieved Dathe in the bottom of the fifth and proceeded to allow a run in the four batters he faced.
- David Stich recorded the last out of the eighth inning to escape a jam in game two.
- Alezeah Gutierrez started game four of the series and allowed three hits and three walks while striking out five.
- Johnny Stacy relieved him in the sixth and struck out five to complete the shutout.
 
QUICK HITS:
- Austin Beck two triples lead the Lone Star Conference.
- Braxton Pearson leads the conference with 10 strikeouts.
- Justin Harris is tied for 3rd in the LSC with two home runs.
- Kamden Kelton is tied for 3rd in the LSC with three doubles.
- Tayten Tredaway's five walks is tied for 3rd in the conference.
 
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS:
CONFERENCE FAVORITES:
The Rams were selected as the favorites to take the 2024 LSC crown, earning the top spot in the preseason poll with 503 points, including 38 of the 39 first-place votes. Coming in second was UT Tyler followed by St. Edwards and Lubbock Christian.
 
NCBWA PRESEASON ALL - AMERICANS:
The Rams had four players selected to the NCBWA Preseason All-American Team, earning First-Team honors was outfielder Jacob Guerrero who was also selected as the 2024 Lone Star Conference Preseason Player of the Year. Being named to the All-American Second-Team is starting pitcher Braxton Pearson, who was named Lone Star Conference Preseason Pitcher of the Year and catcher Tripp Clark. Rounding out the honors is utility man Austin Beck who was named an Honorable Mention.
