SAN ANGELO – The sixth signing of the summer for the Angelo State men's basketball program is Ja'Queze Kirby, Rams Basketball head coach
Vinay Patel announced this morning.
Kirby, a 6-foot-7 forward, joins the Rams from Division II Augusta University in Georgia. The Hazelhurst, Georgia native has enjoyed a prolific career, scoring 1,113 points on 48.5 percent shooting from the field and 39.2 percent shooting from three-point range.
Kirby averages 5.5 rebounds and one steal per game across his career, which spans 107 games.
"Ja'Queze brings a wealth of experience to our program for this upcoming season," said Patel. "He is a player who plays with a high motor and has the skillset to score in a variety of ways."
As a junior in 2023-24, Kirby averaged 14 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, starting 27 of 29 games for the Jags as he ranked second on the team in scoring and rebounding, while leading the squad in made three-pointers.
"He can rebound and block shots at a high level," said Patel. "We are excited about the impact that he can add to our team on both ends of the floor and believe his effort level and competitiveness will fit with the culture we have established at Angelo State."
Kirby scored a career-high 30 points on January 3
rd, 2024, against USC Beaufort in a 114-112 win over the Sand Sharks. Kirby went 12-for-18 from the field that day, making three three-pointers, grabbing nine rebounds, assisting four times, and recording three steals.
Kirby, as a freshman in the 2021-22 season, helped the Jags go 33-4 overall as they won the Peach Belt Conference titles and the NCAA Southeast Regional.
Augusta would advance to the national championship game in 2022, where Kirby started and scored seven points and grabbed nine rebounds despite the Jags falling to Northwest Missouri State. Kirby was named to the Elite Eight All-Tournament Team and the Southeast Regional All-Tournament Team.
"Anytime you add a player to the locker room who has been on championship teams, it is beneficial," said Patel. "Ja'Queze has been a part of big games and produced at a very high level in those games."
As a sophomore, Kirby started 27 of 31 games, averaging 10.1 points and 5.5 rebounds per game as he helped Augusta defend their Peach Belt Conference titles.
In his prep career, Kirby was named a back-to-back 2A Georgia player of the year by the Georgia Basketball Coaches Association.
"Ja'Queze is a tremendous young man, and our staff truly enjoyed building a relationship with him in the recruiting process," said Patel. "Fans are going to enjoy getting to know him and watching the energy he brings on game night!"
