Rams Look to Bounce Back Against UT Permian Basin

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State men's basketball team looks to break their three-game losing streak on Thursday evening against UT Permian Basin, the last team the Rams defeated, doing so 80-77 on January 13th inside the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.

LAST TIME OUT
The Rams dropped both of their games against Texas A&M-Kingsville, falling 67-64 last Wednesday in San Angelo before the Hogs claimed a 58-56 win last Saturday in Kingsville. Wednesday's game saw the Javelinas make their last five field goal attempts to win it down the stretch, and Saturday's contest saw Bryce Smith hit a no-look layup with 0.9 seconds left to clinch the game for TAMUK.

SCOUTING UT PERMIAN BASIN
UT Permian Basin is 8-11 this season and 4-7 in LSC play. Starting league play winless in six games, they have won four of their past five, with the lone loss coming against the Rams on January 13th. The Falcons are 3-5 inside the Falcon Dome this season. Five Falcons average double figures in scoring for an offense that scores 77.4 points per game. Tash Lunday leads the team with 18 points and 8.4 rebounds per game; Lunday recorded a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double against the Rams. Reigning LSC Offensive Player of the Week Sharrod Taylor has scored in double digits in each of the past six games, including a career-high 35 last time out against Texas A&M International. The Falcons shoot 43.8 percent from the field and 35.4 percent from three. Defensively, they force 12.1 turnovers per game and hold opponents to 46.1 percent shooting from the field and 34.3 percent shooting from deep.

BARSHAM AND PETTAWAY SHINE OFF THE BENCH
The duo of Ashraf Barsham and Quadir Pettaway powered the Rams' offense off the bench last time out in Kingsville, each scoring 19 points and accounting for 68 percent of the Rams' total points. Barsham shot 7-for-11 from the field and recorded seven steals, becoming the second Ram in the past two weeks to record seven steals, with Jordan Crawford also doing so against UT Dallas. Pettaway, who missed the previous ten games due to injury, was 6-for-12 from the field and 5-for-9 from three-point range in 24 minutes of action.

AIR JHORDAN
Jhordan Ryan has been a force down low for the Rams since being inserted into the starting lineup. In his five games as a starter, Ryan has recorded four double-doubles, with that streak coming to an end last time out in Kingsville. The Montserratian has averaged 37 minutes per game and played the full 40 minutes twice. He is averaging 13 points and 12 rebounds in the past five games, which was highlighted by an 18-point, 19-rebound effort against UT Dallas.

LITTLE NAMED LSC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK TO OPEN SEASON
Rams forward Zyon Little was named the Lone Star Conference defensive player of the week for his performances at the D2CCA Tip-Off Classic at the Trailhead to start off the 2025-26 season. Little led the Rams' rebounding effort, averaging seven rebounds per game. The Dickinson native also nearly recorded two double-doubles with 11 points and eight rebounds against Nebraska-Kearney and ten points and eight rebounds against No. 10 Colorado School of Mines.

NEW TEAM, WHO DIS?
The Rams will have a new look in the 2025-26 season as they return only two players - Chace Fields and Darius Brady - from last year's team. The Rams' coaching staff brought in 12 new players, four of whom come from the Division I ranks. Four of the newcomers join ASU from a JUCO, two from Division II, and two from high school.

RAMS RANKED SIXTH IN LSC PRESEASON POLL
The Rams were picked sixth in the LSC Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league's coaches, sports information directors, and media members. Defending regional champions DBU were picked to repeat as LSC Champions, followed by St. Mary's, Lubbock Christian, St. Edward's, and West Texas A&M.

HOME COURT DOMINANCE
Under head coach Vinay Patel, the Rams are 39-7 inside the Junell Center/Stephens Arena, good enough for an .848 winning percentage. The Rams won their first 21 games on their home court under Patel's guidance, including a 13-0 mark in 2022-23, Patel's first season in charge.

RAMS IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY
Under head coach Vinay Patel, the Rams are 21-7 in non-conference play and 4-1 in true road non-conference games.
