TOPEKA, Kan. – Freshman
Kaelen Valdez tied her career-high in kills, helping Angelo State sweep Southwest Baptist University, 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-19) at the Lady Blues Regional Crossover Tournament Saturday morning. The 'Belles were on fire offensively hitting .302 in the match and the defense was solid holding the Bearcats to a hitting percentage of just .084.
Valdez tallied 13 kills, four digs, two assists, a block assist and hit .522 in the win. Sophomore
Alisa Meredith recorded a team-best 13 digs and three service aces, while sophomore
Caroline Cleveland registered 12 digs. Angelo State (7-8) got a solid performance from setter
Alex Woolsey, as she notched 35 assists, nine digs and five kills in the sweep.
Game one was all ASU, as the 'Belles held Southwest Baptist (6-10) to just 10 kills on 38 attempts and forced the Bearcats into eight attack errors. The Rambelles jumped ahead to an early lead and never trailed in the set. Woolsey paced the offense with 10 assists and helped the 'Belles to 15 attacks (.344 hitting percentage) in the first set. ASU won game one, 25-15.
The second set was much of the same as the 'Belles did not allow the Bearcats to hit over .100 in the set. Limiting SBU to only nine kills, ASU knocked down 19 of its own in the set and went on to win 25-18.
The Bearcats battled back in the third set, trying to avoid the sweep. But, the Rambelles continued their offensive attack slamming 16 kills in the set and 50 in the contest.
Alisa Meredith's serves were dominating as she helped the 'Belles come back from a 17-14 deficit after serving up six consecutive serves, including a service ace that had amazing spin to it. Now holding a 20-17 lead, the 'Belles put the match away on a Valdez kill, 25-19.
Southwest Baptist was led by Ashley Jurgensmeyer, who tallied a team-best 12 kills and hit .333 in the contest. Setter Brianna Wallace contributed 26 assists and six digs, while libero Marcy Greenwade notched a match-high 14 digs.
The Rambelles will wrap up tournament play at 5 p.m., tonight when it goes head to head with host No. 7 Washburn at Lee Arena.
