SAN ANTONIO – LaDonn Huckaby surpassed his career-high with 12 first-half points and LaMarshall Corbett and
Ridge McKeither both finished with double-doubles as Angelo State avenged a three-overtime loss to St. Mary's with a 67-57 win at Bill Greehey Arena Thursday.
Huckaby, who scored 14 points in the game after going scoreless earlier in the season against the Rattlers (6-5), went 4-for-5 from the field in the first half while helping the Rams (3-6) to an eight-point lead at the break. Angelo State led throughout the entire game en route to its third-consecutive win as Corbett chipped in 16 points and a career- best 12 rebounds and McKeither registered his seventh double-double of the year with 23 points and 12 rebounds.
The Rams led by as many as 11 points in the first eight minutes of the game before the Rattlers surged back to within a single basket by the waning minutes of the first half. Huckaby hit three free throws down the stretch and McKeither tipped in two baskets to give ASU a 32-24 advantage at the break.
The Rattlers were able to cut the Rams' lead to six at two different times early in the second half, but unlike the teams' previous meeting this season in San Angelo, the Rams wouldn't relent. With six minutes remaining, Corbett drained a three-pointer and followed with a fast break dunk on the next possession to give ASU the first of two 15-point leads it would have in the game.
Corbett finished nearly eight points off of his season average but obliterated his career-high in tying McKeither for the game-high. Corbett entered the season with a single game career-high of five rebounds and has reached that total in six of the Rams nine contests. McKeither has scored at least 20 points and grabbed at least 10 rebounds in all of his seven double-double efforts this season.
St. Mary's was led by Kevin Kotzur who matched the 21 points he scored against the Rams in the Rattlers' 103-100 win at the Junell Center on Dec. 8. The Rattlers played all but five minutes of the game without starter Brad Hubenak, landed awkwardly while fighting for a rebound and hurt his knee. Josh Orta, the Rattlers second leading scorer on the year, was limited to just three points before fouling out late in the game. Lamb Autrey joined Kotzur in double digits with 13 points.
Angelo State will attempt to avenge another early season loss when the Rams travel to Texas-Permian Basin Sunday for a 4:30 p.m. contest. The Rams dropped a 60-56 decision to UTPB at the Tarleton State Tournament in the second game of the season (Nov. 20).
