LAKELAND, Fla. – Angelo State notched its first win of the 2010 season behind freshman
Kaelen Valdez's match-high 13 kills and .632 hitting percentage. Valdez led the Rambelles to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-13) sweep over Southwest Baptist in the Florida Southern Classic, Saturday morning.
Valdez's exceptional performance also included four digs, one assist and a block assist. Sophomore setter
Alex Woolsey picked up a match-high 41 assists, eight digs, one service ace, two block assists and hit .364 in the contest. The 'Belles (1-2) received strong showings from sophomores
Alisa Meredith and
Alexa Williams, as Meredith accumulated seven kills, one assist, a pair of service aces, five digs and two block assists, while Williams dug a match-high 18 balls for ASU.
Angelo State got on the board first in set one, taking an early four-point lead (6-2), but Southwest Baptist (1-2) battled back to take an 11-10 advantage on a kill by Joanna Granzow. The Rambelles' 10-0 run, highlighted by four consecutive kills by Valdez, sealed the fate of the Bearcats in the first set, as ASU went on to win, 25-18.
The Bearcats fought hard in the second set, trading points with the Rambelles through the beginning of the game. Locked in an 11-11 tie,
Chelsea Gibson hammered a ball over the net to give the 'Belles a lead they would never relinquish. ASU would go on to take set two, 25-17.
With a 2-0 advantage going into the third set, the Rambelles quickly jumped out in front of the Bearcats, taking a 12-5 lead on a kill by Meredith. ASU held Southwest Baptist to a .188 hitting percentage and cruised to a 25-13 victory to complete the sweep.
Southwest Baptist was led by Ashley Jurgensmeyer's 11 kills and .318 hitting percentage. Brianna Wallace contributed 28 assists and three digs for the Bearcats, while Marcy Greenwade had 10 digs in the match.
Angelo State will be back in action this afternoon when it takes on Montevallo in the final match of the Florida Southern Classic at 4 p.m., in Jenkins Field House.
