Angelo State Rams vs. Wayland Baptist Gallery
BOX SCORE
SAN ANGELO, Texas – Keenen Coleman had a career-high 27 points on 11-of-21 shooting to propel the Angelo State men's basketball team past Wayland Baptist, 84-78, Tuesday at the Junell Center.
“It's a good win,” head coach Fred Rike said. “It wasn't pretty, but it's always good to win homer-openers. It's good to have games at home this time of year which we haven't had in the last year or two.”
The Rams (2-1) had 25 assists led by senior
Joey Lenox who had six, followed by Coleman's five. Freshman
Dakota Rawls tied for a game-high eight rebounds. Defensively, the Rams forced Wayland Baptist (1-2) into 18 turnovers; however Wayland Baptist held a 45-28 rebound advantage.
“One of the good things we did is that we shared the ball,” Rike said. “We had 25 assists to eight turnovers which is unheard of, but is one of the strengths of this team.”
Wayland Baptist committed 12 turnovers in the first half that lead to 16 points for the Rams. Lenox went three-of-five from the three-point line to add nine points in the first half. The Pioneers took it to the locker room tied at 46 as T.J. Jacobs scored 15 points and received 12 points from Isaiah Jackson in the first half.
The Pioneers kept chipping away in the second half even though the Rams had a six-point lead with two minutes left. Javae King-Chilchrist hit two free throws and sealed the victory with a dunk with 10 seconds left to go.
Zach Jones chipped in eight points in 12 minutes of action in his first home game as a Ram.
The Rams will return to the Junell Center Saturday for a 7 p.m. tip against Paul Quinn College.
