SAN ANTONIO – Joseph Leftridge went 2-for-4 and drove in the Rams' only run as the Angelo State baseball team dropped a pair of games to No. 13 St. Mary's in a Sunday doubleheader at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium. The Rams fell, 8-1, in game one and were shutout, 4-0, in the nightcap.
With the loss, the Rams fall to 17-10 on the season and the Rattlers improve to 21-6 as St. Mary's head coach Charlie Migl collected his 900th career win with the victory in game two.
The Rams got things going early as
Zach Cohen led off the game with a single through the right side and advanced to second on a walk to
Travis Lites. Rightfielder
Tate Allison laid down a bunt to move the runners over, but STMU starter Carl O'Neal (3-2) couldn't field the ball and Allison reached on the error. With bases loaded and nobody out, Leftridge sent a fly ball to centerfield which scored Cohen. Leftfielder
Garrett Harris hit a ground ball to first base, reaching on a fielder's choice as Allison was thrown out at second. Lites motored around third challenging the throw to the plate and was called out at home ending the inning.
Angelo State starting pitcher
Matt Rechkemmer (3-1) allowed a pair of runs in the second on three consecutive singles followed by a sacrifice fly and a double to left-centerfield.
Down by just a run (2-1), the Rams tried to mount a comeback in the top of the third as Cohen was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Lites executed a sacrifice bunt and Cohen moved into scoring position. With two outs, Leftridge singled up the middle and Cohen rounded third determined to scoring the tying run. He slid into home and Rattlers' catcher Ryan Morrow made a swoop tag as home plate umpire Jeff Hilliard called Cohen out at the plate to end the inning. The controversial call sent tempers flaring in the Rams dugout as head coach
Kevin Brooks was ejected from the game.
The call seemed to change the momentum of the game for the Rams as they surrendered at least one run over the next four innings. The ASU offense went cold as O'Neal limited the Rams to just one hit for the remainder of the game.
Rechkemmer suffered the loss, his first of the season, going 2.1 innings and allowing three runs, all earned, on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. O'Neal collected his third victory of the season as he tossed a complete game, scattering four hits, allowing just one earned run with seven strikeouts.
In the nightcap, St. Mary's starting pitcher Sky Severns (4-0) limited the Rams to just four hits in the game. He faced four batters over the minimum and allowed just one extra-base hit, a double to
Zak Leonhardt in the seventh inning.
Lites, Harris and
Zach Klink were the only other Rams to collect base hits in the game.
Angelo State starter
Craig Blair (1-2) absorbed the loss as he surrendered two runs, both earned, on six hits, with one strikeout in 3.0 innings of work.
Severns improved to 4-0 on the year as he shutout the Rams on four hits, with two strikeouts in 6.0+ innings pitched. Sammy Rivas came on in relief and recorded his sixth save of the season as he retired the Rams in order to end the game.
The Rams look to get back on the winning track Tuesday, March 22, when they take on No. 22 Southern Arkansas at LaGrave Field in Fort Worth. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Live stats will be available on AngeloSports.com.
