ALLEN, Texas – Paige Weishuhn and Haylee Oliver each scored 14 points as the fifth–seeded Angelo State women's basketball team defeated the fourth-seeded Cameron Aggies on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference Championships, 61-57 at the Allen Event Center.

Cassi Stegall joined Weishuhn and Oliver in double figures with 12 points as the Belles won in the tournament for the first time since 2008. Stegall had 12 points off the bench and was a perfect 2-for-2 from behind the 3-point line. Oliver also knocked down two treys and had a team-high seven rebounds.

The Belles fought back from a 12-point second half deficit against the Aggies (15-11), who were looking to defeat ASU for the second time in three games this season. Cameron lead 35-23 with 18:07 left to play in the game.

Angelo State started chipping away at the Aggies' advantage with different members of the squad contributing during the second half. Ashley James hit a three that brought the deficit to single digits and after Cameron score, Cara Gorton scored in the post while being fouled and the sophomore completed the old-fashion three-point play.

ASU would not trail by double-digits again as the Belles continued to pull closer to CU, finally tying the game at 45-45 with 9:23 left to play on an Oliver three. Angelo State would eventually take the lead on a Stegall layup with 8:53 remaining in the game.

Cameron's Julie Paunovic scored the next five points for the Aggies and gave them a 50-49 advantage with 6:28 left in the game. CU would then push its lead back to five with 5:19 left in the game (54-49).

A 7-0 run would bring the Belles back in it with Gorton and Stegall being the main catalysts as ASU took a 56-54 lead on a Stegall three at the 3:43 mark. CU's Sabelle Diata, the LSC's Player of the Year, scored on a layup tying the game for the ninth time.

Oliver would respond with a jumper with 1:42 remaining that gave ASU the lead for good. The Aggies would threaten a couple more times down the stretch but either could not convert at the free throw line or get by the Belles defense.

After Stegall put the Belles back up by three, 60-57, Cameron had one final chance to tie the game, but Oliver blocked Alexis Williams attempt and sealed the game at the free throw line.

Paunovic scored a game-high 27 points for the Aggies on 10-of-20 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Diata had 12 points, but only had four after halftime. The Senegal native also had five blocks.

Angelo State will return on Saturday for its semifinals game with the winner between No. 1 seed Tarleton State and No. 8 seed Eastern New Mexico. That game is slated to start at 2:30 p.m.
