SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Athletic Department held its 14
th annual Holland's Banquet Award on Monday night at the Junell Center with 13 student-athletes being honored with their sports' respective award.
The Holland's Award winners are selected for their sportsmanship, teamwork, ability and being a conscientious player. The 13 award winners include
Elsamartina Apo (softball),
Bryan Barker (men's cross country),
Nate Bayless (football),
Andrew LaCombe (baseball),
Joey Lenox (men's basketball),
Alyssa Priest (women's cross country),
Megan Schaffer (soccer),
Kayla Smith (volleyball),
Nick Smith (men's track & field), Todd Talley (athletic training),
Cathryn Rittenberry (women's track & field),
Courtney Rutledge (golf), and
Paige Weishuhn (women's basketball).
New awards were created this year to honor the male and female athletes of the year. The male athlete of the year award was named to honor former Angelo State athletic director Phil George while the female athlete of the year award was named to honor Angelo State athletic director Kathleen Brasfield.
Blake Hamblin was the recipient of the Phil George Award while
Megan Schaffer was honored with the Kathleen Brasfield Award.
The Golden Horn Award given to the team with a combination of athletic success, community service and academic went to the Belles' volleyball team.
Zach Cohen and
Cathryn Rittenberry were both honored with the Academic Excellence Award which is given to the male and female student-athlete with the highest grade-point average. Cohen has a 3.92 grade-point average and is majoring in biology while Rittenberry has a 4.0 grade-point average and is majoring in accounting.
At least one member from each team were named to the 2012 Athletic Honor Roll. To be selected student-athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA, be at least a sophomore in athletic and academic standing, have been at ASU for two full semesters, and have made a significant contribution to their team.
