SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State women's basketball team won its fourth-straight game with a 58-52 victory over Texas Woman's in Denton on Saturday afternoon.
The Belles (12-12, 9-9 LSC) won four-straight games in a season for the first time since 2011. The victory avenged a 61-39 loss to TWU (6-18, 4-14) back on January 12. ASU held the Pioneers to just 30-percent shooting and only 18-percent in the first half.
The two teams were tied at 7-7 at the 14:37 mark before a
Haylee Oliver free throw gave ASU an 8-7 advantage. The Belles would clamp down on defense and hold to just four made field goals and 13 points through the rest of the half. The Pioneers were helped by 11 free throws in the first half.
Oliver scored seven points in the first half and the Belles shot 35.7-percent to build a six point lead at 26-20 at the break.
The Belles started the second half with an 11-0 run sparked by 3-pointers by
Leah LeMaire and Oliver. The Pioneers wouldn't go away quietly as they would have their own 16-5 run to make it 45-38 with 6:09 to play.
The ASU lead would continue to dwindle with TWU cutting it down to four at the 1:29 mark of the game.
Cassi Stegall, Oliver and LeMaire would all hit free throws down the stretch to seal the win. The Belles would shoot 41.7-percent for the game and out rebound the Pioneers 45-28.
Four Belles scored in double figures with
Lauren Holt leading the way with 15 points. LeMaire recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 14 rebounds. Oliver chipped in 11 points and Youngblood would add 10 points and eight rebounds.
Rebekah Cluley was TWU's leading scorer with 18 points.
The Belles will return to the court on the road on Wednesday, February 27
th at Texas A&M-Kingsville with a tip time of 6 p.m.
