SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State baseball team won its non-conference series over Southeastern Oklahoma State 2-1 after the two teams split a Wednesday doubleheader at Foster Field.

The No. 14 Rams (14-6) won the first game 5-3 before the Storm (12-10) held on for a 15-14 10-inning win in a game where SE led by six runs after the first inning. ASU improved to 7-4 at home this season in the series after hitting .418 as a team against its former Lone Star Conference foe.

“I'm extremely proud of our effort throughout the series,” ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. “We never quit when we were down in the final game. Sometimes all the results don't go the way you want them to, but if we can play consistently like we did here in this series then we'll be a pretty good team.”

Quaid McKinnon led the Rams in the series with eight hits and drove in five runs, while Ryan Greer added six hits and Lee Neumann and Reggie Rodriguez each had five.

The series finale started with SE scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning and then making the final out over four hours later after the Rams had tied the game with three runs in the eighth and ninth innings. ASU, which also trailed 11-5 in the fourth after an earlier comeback, had runners at first and third with two outs after Luke Solomon had reached on a single and Hunter Choate on an error, but a hard hit by Ryan Greer was handled by the second baseman who threw to first base to end the game. Travis Caraway was the hero for SE with a two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th inning for the eventual game-winning run.

Lee Neumann led the Rams in the game with three hits, including a two-run single in the ninth inning to force the game into extra innings. Neumann had two RBI along with Tanner Kalina and Reggie Rodriguez. The ninth inning scoring started with a Christian Summers double to center field that scored Greer. Angelo State finished the game with 15 hits from 10 different players.

Mark Frank led SE in the game with three RBI on two hits, while Chevis Springer and Travis Caraway each had three-hit games.

Jake Feckley (3-2) receives the loss after coming into the game in the ninth inning. Feckley, who earned the save in the day's first game, was the sixth ASU pitcher in the game. The Rams pitching staff walked 13 and gave up 16 hits in the loss. Cameron Mann (3-0) earned the win for the Storm after throwing 3.2 innings (91 pitches) and striking out four and allowing six runs.

“I thought we swung the bats well and played great defensively,” Brooks said, “but we do need to find more reliable pitching. That's concerning at this point and something we have to get better at.”

Jake Albert threw well in the first game of the doubleheader after throwing 3.1 innings of three hit baseball in relief. Mike Weatherly, who started the game to get in midweek work for the Rams, went 1.2 innings with three strikeouts and earned the win. Weatherly improves to 3-2 on the season with the victory.

McKinnon, Neumann and Greer each had two hits in the game, while McKinnon led the team with two RBI. ASU held a 1-0 lead for the first three innings after a Summers sacrifice RBI that scored McKinnon. The Rams would tack on two more in the fourth with RBI from Andrew LaCombe and Solomon.

Vance Woodruff (1-4) received the loss for the Storm in the first game after giving up three runs and eight hits in four innings in the first game.

Angelo State returns to action this weekend with a four game series against Texas A&M-Kingsville which starts conference play at Foster Field. The series starts with a 6:30 p.m. game on Friday, followed by a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
