GAME ONE BOX // GAME TWO BOX
PORTALES, N.M. – Andrew LaCombe drove in the game-winning run in extra innings in the opener and picked up two more RBI in the nightcap to help lead the Angelo State baseball team to a Lone Star Conference doubleheader sweep of Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at Greyhound Field.
ASU (24-12, 9-6 LSC) improved its road-record to 14-3 with a 4-3 win in the opener and a 7-4 victory in the second game against the Greyhounds (18-16, 5-10 LSC). The Rams are now on a four-game winning streak entering Sunday's 2 p.m. series finale.
“We made plays when we need to,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “We had everyone step up at one time or another during the games and it was a great couple of team wins.”
Jake Feckley (6-3) earned the win in the first game after striking out four and scattering 10 hits in seven innings of work. Feckley threw 102 pitches before
Austin Church entered the game in the eighth inning to secure his second save of the season by getting to fly-ball outs and a ground out to end the game.
Mike Weatherly (4-2) threw a complete-game to take the win in the second game after striking out four and walking only one. Weatherly stranded six Greyhounds on base in a 90-pitch effort which was rewarded with the Rams scoring three runs in the top of the seventh – highlighted by a
Tyler Coughenour two-RBI double that broke open a 4-4 game.
LaCombe, who went 3 for 4 in the game, hit a single to center field to score
Christian Summers who hit a one-out triple to left center and scored the winning run in the opener.
“We definitely had two great starts from our starting pitchers,” LaCombe said. “They both really set the tone. They both really stepped up and Church came in and got a great save. Our lineup came up with some clutch hits all day. Christian's triple in the first game was absolutely huge.”
Summers,
Hunter Choate and
David Goggin each had two hits in the opener, while six different Rams came up with one hit each in the second game to account for the ASU hits. Summers now has four triples on the season, while Coughenour hit his fourth double with a shot down the left field line to score that scored two runs in the top of the seventh. Summers drove in the inning's third run with a single up the middle which scored Coughenour.
Jesperett Shergill (2-4) received the loss for ENMU in the opener after allowing four runs on 11 hits in 7.1 innings, while Dustin Montano (0-2) took the loss in the final game in relief. Montano gave up two runs in 4.1 innings. Luis Quinones finished the day with three hits to lead the Greyhounds who slip to 14-4 at home this season.
Michael Lange (3-2) is scheduled to start on Sunday for the Rams who are looking to sweep the Greyhounds for the second straight season, but also the first time in Portales.
