SAN ANGELO – Quaid McKinnon was a triple shy of the cycle and drove in two runs to help lead the Angelo State baseball team to a 10-3 non-conference win over McMurry on Tuesday at Foster Field.
ASU (25-13) took advantage of four War Hawk errors in the game and outhit its opponent 8-6 in the game.
Bryce Zak (4-1) earns the win for the Rams after striking out two in 2.2 innings in his eighth start of the season, while Charlie Hejny (2-3) receives the loss after allowing three runs in his first start of the year.
Angelo State, which sweeps the season series from McMurry after also earning a 7-2 win on Feb. 12 in Abilene, scored three runs on one hit in the first inning and would lead 8-3 after four innings in its final non-conference game of the season.
McKinnon hit his first home run of the season and fourth of his career with a leadoff shot to center field in the bottom of the fourth. The senior is now hitting .338 with 19 RBI this season heading into this weekend's final home games against Tarleton State.
“We came in playing well and wanted to keep it rolling,” said McKinnon, who scored on a passed ball following an RBI double in the second inning to make the score 5-0. “The biggest thing for us tonight was our pitching. Those guys did a great job of throwing strikes and letting our defense take care of the outs. It was a game keeps us excited about what we're doing.”
Christian Summers had his 12th multi-hit game with a single and double, while
Andrew LaCombe hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to draw even with
Lee Neumann for the team lead with 34 RBI this season. LaCombe and Summers are tied with 13 doubles each for the team lead. On the base paths,
Tyler Coughenour stole two bases and
Ryan Greer stole one. Each player now has 20 steals this season which puts them in second in the conference. ASU stole six bases on the night and is up to 96 on the season.
“I thought we played solid defense and did a great job of getting runners on base,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “We made things happen tonight.”
Angelo State used six pitchers in the game with
Graylon Brown, Jaime MacLean,
Travis Stavinoha,
Bryant Rutledge and
Mason Leavitt seeing time on the mound in relief. Brown had the longest outing after striking out two in two innings of work, while Jaime MacLean had one strikeout and didn't allow a hit in 1.1 inning of work. Leavitt closed out the game in the ninth inning with two strikeouts.
“I hope it gives them confidence in themselves,” said Brooks of the bullpen. “We have confidence in them and think they can be big for us this year.”
Angelo State returns to action this weekend with a four-game series at Foster Field against Tarleton State. The series, which is the final home stand of the season, begins at 6:30 p.m. on Friday with a 4 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday and the series finale at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
