SAN ANGELO – The No. 20-ranked Angelo State baseball team will start Lone Star Conference play this weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against Cameron on Friday and Saturday in Lawton, Okla. at McCord Field.
ASU (10-3) is 6-3 on the road this season, while the Aggies (5-5) are 2-2 at home but have not played a game since Saturday, Feb. 15. The Rams are coming off a four-game sweep of Colorado School of Mines last weekend at Foster Field and a 3-2 loss to No. 5 St. Mary's on Tuesday in San Antonio. The Rams took three of four in Lawton after dropping the series opener last season, but the Aggies have a 15-12 advantage in the all-time series.
"This is an important series for us to get off to a good start in conference play, but also because of the position we put ourselves in our non-conference schedule," ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. "We feel like we're going to have to win the conference to move on to a regional tournament with our non-conference losses. It is very important for us to get wins this weekend and not be climbing up hill from the start of conference play after the first weekend."
ASU comes into the series hitting .336 as a team with 25 doubles, seven triples, four home runs and 105 singles. The Rams have taken 34 walks and have been hit by 26 pitches in 13 games, while the pitching staff has a 2.83 ERA with 114 strikeouts and only 32 walks. ASU has outscored its opponents 91-43 this season and its losses have come with two one-run games and one two-run decision. Angelo State will host Tarleton State next weekend at Foster Field after playing the Aggies.
