Belles Welcome Western New Mexico on Saturday

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team will welcome to Western New Mexico on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.

The Belles (1-0) opened the season 41st season with a win and moved to 21-20 all-time in season openers. The 108 points scored against Arlington Baptist was the most points scored in a regulation game and the second most in school history. It is also the ninth time a Belle team has scored at least 100 points. ASU hit 53.1-percent from the floor and held Arlington Baptist to 32.8-percent.

Kevin Baker joined Carole Smith, Mary Hansen, Peggy Davis, Sally Walling Brooks and Cayla Petree as coaches that won their debut game at the helm of the Belles. The best start to a season by a first year coach was 4-0 by Sally Walling Brooks in 2000-2001.

Taylor Dorsey had an eye-opening debut with 27 points and 10 rebounds. The junior hit 55.5-percent of her shots from the floor and 60.0-percent from the 3-point line. The 27 points is the most by an ASU player since Paige Weishuhn hit 29 against Tarleton State on Feb. 22, 2012. The 10 rebounds came with five on the offensive end and five on the defensive end.

Brea Mitchell recorded the team's second double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds (five offensive, five defensive). She made 57-perecent from the floor and tied for the team lead with four assists.  The UNM transfer also added two steals.

Kiahna Thompson scored her first double-digit point game as a Belle with 10 points. The sophomore was four-of-five from the field and a perfect two-of-two from the foul line. Diamalises Rivera scored 10 points to go along with eight rebounds, two assists and two steals. The senior has scored double-digits in 12 games in her career.

Christina Robinson made her ASU debut by scoring nine points on four-of-seven shooting (.570). The junior hit her only 3-point shot of the game and grabbed two rebounds and dished out one assists. KeAnna Kelly led the team in steals (four) and blocks (two). The sophomore added nine points as well.

Nekeita Bailey scored seven points off the bench. The junior dished out three assists and made  three steals. . Lexi Murphy returned from an injury plagued 2014-15 with six points on three-of-four shooting. The junior also hauled in four rebounds in her first action since 2014. Lou Hawins was perfect from the free throw line going four-of-four on her way to six points in the season opener. Natalie Quesnel and Jasmine Prophet each scored four points each. Prophet tied for the team lead with four assists including a nice no-look pass to Mitchell. Alle Brittain and Fabrianna Dixon each scored two points for ASU. Danielle Patillo saw four minutes of action and recorded two rebounds.

ASU is 0-2 for Saturday's opponent Western New Mexico. The Mustangs enter the game 2-1 on the year with their only loss being a 66-62 setback to UTPB. WNMU has wins over OPSU and University of the Southwest. The Mustangs are scoring 58.0 points per game and holding opponents to 52.7.

The game will be carried locally on the radio on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call and on television on RamTV, Suddenlink Channel 6.
