No. 8 Rams, Aggies set for two-day, four-game LSC series at Foster Field

SAN ANGELO – The No. 8-ranked Angelo State baseball team brings a nine-game winning streak into the start of Lone Star Conference play where it will host Cameron in a pair of doubleheaders on Sunday and Monday at Foster Field.

The Rams (10-1, 0-0 LSC) and Aggies (6-5, 0-0 LSC) will start their series with a 2 p.m. doubleheader (7/9 innings) on Sunday before playing a 1 p.m. doubleheader (7/9) on Monday. The series schedule has been adjusted two times during the week due to weather forecasts and conditions. ASU is 9-0 at home this season following three-game sweeps of Regis, Lubbock Christian and Texas A&M International following opening the season on the road by splitting a doubleheader against McMurry at Walt Driggers Field in Abilene. The Rams have outscored their opponents 81-32 this season and have committed only seven errors through 11 games.

ASU's pitching staff has been one of the best in the nation and owns a 2.77 ERA with 113 strikeouts and only 34 walks through 91 innings of work this season. The pitching staff recorded 42 strikeouts in last weekend's three-game series against Regis and has limited opposing batters to a .221 average throughout the season.

At the plate, the Rams are hitting .346 with 123 hits through 11 games and 355 plate appearances. The Rams have 30 doubles, two triples and 11 home runs this season and a .414 team on-base percentage. ASU has seven players hitting over .300 this season and three hitting over .400. In the past six games with their sweeps of Regis and LCU, the Rams have outscored their opponents 44-7.

STARTER REPORT: Naemark has recorded 27 strikeouts and two wins in his past two starts. A junior left-hander from Arizona, he established a new program record with 15 strikeouts last Saturday against Regis and was named the NCBWA and Collegiate Baseball National Pitcher of the Week this week for his performance. He also earned his second straight LSC Pitcher of the Week honor. Naemark will be making his fifth start of the season on Sunday against the Aggies and will be making his first LSC start. He has 38 strikeouts (1.58 per inning) and has only walked three all season. He has not walked over one hitter in a game all season, including the season-opener against McMurry where he did not receive a decision after having three strikeouts and no walks in five innings. He has followed his first start of the season with an eight-strikeout performance against TAMIU in a five-inning no-decision where he did not allow a run and then a 12-strikeout performance against LCU and his 15-strikeout game against Regis. Naemark is in his first season at ASU after transferring from Cochise College. Bass (2-0) has won his last three starts and is off to a dominant start to his senior season. A 6-foot-7 right-hander, Bass is coming off back-to-back seven-strikeout performances against LCU and Regis which is his career-high. He was an LSC first-team performer last season and this year's LSC Preseason Pitcher of the Year and is currently 7-4 with 60 strikeouts through 99.0 innings in his career at Angelo State after transferring from Texas Tech last season. Bass has allowed only 17 hits and six runs through 23 innings of work this season. Zak (3-1) has two wins as a starter and one as a reliever this season and is coming off a career-high 11-strikeout performance last Sunday against Regis. A junior right-hander, Zak is coming off a season where he was sidelined with injury. He is 8-2 in his career at ASU after going 5-1 during his sophomore season to go along with a 3-1 start to this year. Zak struck out six against TAMIU and LCU before his 11-strikeout performance against Regis in only five innings. He did not allow a run and held the Rangers to only one hit in five innings of work. His only loss came against McMurry in relief.

ASU, which has not played a four-game series this season, has not determined who will start the fourth game of the series against the Aggies.

BULLPEN REPORT: Trae Davis recorded his first save of the season last week against Regis after going two innings with three strikeouts and on runs allowed. Davis, who is a senior from Mexia, has made eight appearances in his career at ASU including four starts last year before a season-ending injury. Davis has made a seamless transition into the bullpen where he has not allowed a run and has eight strikeouts in four appearances and six innings this season. Graylon Brown (1-0) has three saves this season and five strikeouts in 8 1/3 innings and six appearances to start his junior season. A hard-throwing right-hander, Brown has made 50 appearances in his career at ASU and has 72 career strikeouts and a 9-4 career record. He has allowed only one run this season. Dillon Becker (1-0) also has one save this season and has eight strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings this season. Another high-velocity right-hander, Becker has allowed only one run this season and only four hits. He has made 20 appearances for the Rams in his career after transferring from Blinn College where he played as a freshman. Becker earned his win over LCU after going two innings with three strikeouts in relief.
 
LINEUP REPORT: Brett David leads the Rams with 14 RBI this season and is hitting .389 with three home runs, a triple and two doubles. David, who is ASU's only four-year senior, hit a grand slam against TAMIU and has seven career home runs for the Rams. An El Paso native, David has started all 11 games at first base this season. He has a .489 on-base percentage. J.C. Snyder leads the Rams this season with a .474 batting average after going 4-for-9 last weekend against Regis, including hitting the game-winning home run in the series opener with a solo homer in the seventh inning of a 2-1 win. Snyder, who is in his first season at ASU after transferring from BYU, has seven multi-hit games this season and has two home runs and eight doubles. Paxton DeLaGarza also has seven multi-hit games this season and is hitting .419 with three doubles, one triple and 18 total hits. A junior shortstop, DeLaGarza has not made an error in the field this season.  

Derek Tyner has six multi-hit games this season and is hitting .375 with 15 hits to start his senior season. Tyner, who is a career .332 hitter at ASU after hitting .321 last season as a junior, Tyner has seven RBI and two doubles from the designated hitter slot in the lineup. He hit the first home run of his career against TAMIU earlier this season at Foster Field. Nehwon Norkeh has started all 11 games in center field and comes into LSC play hitting .346 with 16 hits which includes six doubles and three home runs. Norkeh, who is listed as the No. 5-ranked DII professional prospect by Baseball America, had a career-high four hits against TAMIU and has two leadoff homers this season. He also has 21 career stolen bases and has a .420 on-base percentage this season.  Norkeh and David have reached base in all 11 games this season.

Cameron Massengill has 10 hits and eight RBI to start his senior season which is coming after he was named to the LSC first team and to the all-region team as a junior. The senior catcher is a career .314 hitter at Angelo State after transferring from Cisco College. He had three RBI last weekend against Regis and has 29 RBI in 62 games played at ASU. Hunter Spear has three multi-hit games this season and is hitting .414 with 12 hits in 29 plate appearances. He had a career-high three hits in the opener against McMurry and has six RBI this season. Cody Semler, who has played second base, third base and left field, has four hits this season including a home run against LCU. Semler has 22 assists in the field and three sacrifice bunts and three stolen bases. Jarryd Klemm missed last weekend's series against Regis due to injury and is hitting .321 with nine total hits. Klemm has one home run and one double for the Rams in his first season at ASU. Sam Kohler has started four games at second base this season and is hitting .286 with four hits for the Rams. He had a career-high three hits last Sunday against Regis and finished the series with a .364 average. Kohler missed the first two series of the season with injury and has eight assists in the field without an error.

RANKING REPORT: A nine-game winning streak powered by a dominant pitching staff has propelled Angelo State into the national top-10 in two of the four Division II baseball rankings. The Rams are ranked No. 8 in this week's NCBWA poll, No. 10 by Collegiate Baseball and No. 24 by d2baseballnews.com. ASU remains unranked by Perfect Game. The Rams were unranked last week by d2baseballnews.com and Perfect Game and were No. 17 in the NCBWA rankings and No. 20 by Collegiate Baseball.

UP NEXT: The Rams, who will wrap up a 13-game home stand with their series against Cameron, will head to Stephenville next weekend for a four-game LSC series at Tarleton State.
