Belles Clash With Javelinas in Home Opener

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's basketball team will look to keep its hot start to the season in tact this week as it kicks off Lone Star Conference play against Texas A&M-Kingsville at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.

The Belles (3-0) will be playing their first home game of the season after winning three straight road matchups by an average of 26 points to begin the year. ASU has gone 92-35 playing on its home court over the last 10 seasons, with the Belles only posting a losing record at home only once out of those 10 seasons.

Tuesday night's matchup is also the Lone Star Conference opener for the Belles, who were tournament champions last season and finished conference play with a 12-4 record. Angelo State is 8-2 in their last 10 LSC openers, but has lost its last two.

So far this season, the Belles have been on fire offensively, averaging 81.3 points per game, which ranks first in the LSC and No. 23 nationally. ASU also has moved into the top ten nationally in turnover margain at 9.67, and the number ranks first in the conference as well.

Leading the offense has been point guard Taylor Dorsey, who has averaged 25.3 points per game throughout the first three contests, which leads the conference and ranks No. 2 in the nation. Dorsey leads the conference and ranks 11th in the nation in field-goal percentage as well.

Lexi Murphy and Jasmine Prophet are also both averaging double figures at close to 10 points per game each. Murphy also leads the team in assists with an average of 3.7 per game and is second on the team in rebounds with six per game. Prophet is the rebounding leader with seven per game.  The Belles have also seen consistent contribution from Bria Frierson and Madi Greenwood, who are both averaging 7.7 points per game so far this year.

ASU has performed well on the defensive side of the ball as well, giving up an average of just 55.3 points per game so far this season, which ranks third in the LSC. The Belles have the highest turnover margin in the conference at 9.67 per game, and also have the second most steals per game in the LSC with 10.

Dorsey is the team-leader in steals with nine on the season and Christina Robinson is second with six. The Belles have not blocked a large number of shots this season, but Prophet is the team leader with two, and four other players have one each.

The Belles will face a Texas A&M-Kingsville team that is 3-1 so far on the season. The Javelinas have beaten East Central University and Texas A&M International, both of whom ASU has also beaten. TAMUK also played an exhibition against the University of Texas at San Antonio, which it lost, 70-44. The Javelinas only regular season lost on the season came to the University of Tampa, 67-50.
