SAN ANGELO – Angelo State's Katie MacLeay was named a Distinguished Freemont Scholar and received the top scholarship from the James M. and Erma T. Freemont Foundation announced on Monday.
The San Antonio native graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology and a minor in chemistry while maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. She will continue her education after being accepted to the Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Medicine via the early admission process. It is the first time in ASU history that a student has received early admission to the TTUHSC medical program.
 The Freemont Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides scholarships for deserving students who are planning careers in the healthcare and science professions. Ten scholarships were awarded this year to high school, undergraduate and graduate students across the country who are planning careers in healthcare and science professions.
MacLeay earned numerous athletic and academic accolades during her volleyball career at Angelo State. She was the first Angelo State volleyball player to be named a first team CoSIDA Academic All-American and AVCA All-American in the same season. She was a two-time LSC Academic Player of the Year and the LSC Libero of the Year this past season. She finished her career No. 2 on the all-time dig list with 1,889 and set the single season record for digs with 739.
The James M. and Erma T. Foundation was created on the legacy of Dr. James McKinley Freemont, Sr. (1942 – 2013). His life works were built on integrity, hard work, and genuine laughter. He was an obstetrician/gynecologist, medical acupuncturist, and hospital administrator. He believed in higher education and Christian principles. His dedicated wife of 47 years, Erma, and children are determined to continue his legacy by funding projects that reflect his nature.Â
