SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State women's basketball team will host a pair of Lone Star Conference matchups this Thursday, Dec. 7 at 5:30 p.m. against Midwestern State for Military Appreciation Day and Saturday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. versus Cameron.
Current military, their dependents and retirees will receive free admission on Thursday and anybody that brings a piece of clothing to donate for the clothing drive to go toward Hurricane Harvey relief efforts will receive free admission to Saturday's game. Saturday is also Angelo State Faculty and Staff Appreciation night with all faculty and staff and their immediate family receiving free admission. The ASU Greek organizations will also be recognized.Â
The Belles are 4-1 on the season and 2-0 in the LSC after opening conference play with wins over Texas A&M-Kingsville and Texas Woman's. Â ASU is second in the league in scoring offense (69.4 points per game) and scoring defense (56.2 points per game) while leading the league in 3-pointers made at 7.6 per game and a 76.5 percent free throw percentage. The Belles are also tops in the league in blocked shots at 6.00 per game and second in assists with 15.2 per game.
Five of the nine Belles are averaging double figures with three over 12 points per game and are ranked No. 8 to No. 11 in the league in scoring. De'Anira Moore leads the way averaging a double-double. She scored 12.6 points per game and is second in the LSC at 11.0 rebounds per game. She has four games of double figure scoring, three of double digit rebounds and recorded a double-double in three games. Moore leads the LSC in blocks per game with 3.0 and had a career high eight against Texas Woman's.
Madi Greenwood is second on the team in scoring at 12.4 points per game and the top 3-point shooter with a .550 clip. She is the LSC's top free throw shooter hitting 19-of-19 and is leading the Belles with a .444 shooting percentage from the field. The senior is tied for the team lead with 15 assists. She has three games in double figures including a season high 19 versus TWU.
Keanna Kelly is third on the team in scoring with 12.0 points per game. The senior is second on the team in steals with 11 and tied for first with 15 assists on the year. She has made the second most 3-pointers with 10 and is efficient at the free throw line making 92.3 percent of her shots. She recorded a career high 25 points against Oklahoma Christian and has three games in double figures on the year.
Dezirae Hampton has scored in double figured in four of the five Belle games including the last three. She averages 11.6 points per game and is second on the team in rebounds at 7.6. The junior is third on the team in field goal percentage (.429) and is one of five Belles in double figures in assists with 10.
Marquita Daniels is the fifth Belle scoring in double figures at 11.0 points per game. She had a career high 22 points against Oklahoma Christian and scored at least 10 points in three games this season. She leads the team with 13 steals and has dished out eight assists.
Mikayla Blount, Kynese Davis, Dearria Watson and Aaliyah Warren have all contributed off the bench this season. Blount scored nine points off three 3-pointers to help ASU hold off Texas A&M-Kingsville. Davis is tied for second on the team with 12 assists the year. Watson has scored in all five games this season and Warren chipped in four points versus Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Midwestern State enters with a 5-2 overall record and is 2-0 in the LSC. The Mustangs have knocked off Tarleton State and Texas A&M-Commerce to open their conference slate. Cameron is 3-4 on the year and 1-1 in conference. The Aggies will face Texas A&M-Kingsville before coming to San Angelo on Saturday.
