Belles Hold off Javelinas in 72-61 Win

SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State women's basketball team topped Texas A&M-Kingsville Tuesday night in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center to earn their fifth straight win.

The Belles (13-4, 8-3 LSC) had four players finish the game in double figures while holding the Javelinas (5-14, 2-6 LSC) to just 35 percent shooting on the night.

Texas A&M-Kingsville grabbed an early lead in the matchup, scoring five of the game's first seven points, but ASU quickly got back in front on a layup from senior Madi Greenwood and a three-pointer from junior Dezirae Hampton.

Both Greenwood and Hampton continued to stay hot in the opening quarter, and Greenwood hit a jumper just before the buzzer to put the Belles up by six.

Greenwood finished the game as the Belles' leading scorer, matching her career high with 20 points and adding in nine assists, which also led the team. Hampton had a strong night from the floor as well, recording a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

ASU played strong defense to open the second quarter which helped them continue to build their lead, pushing out by as many as 13 points after a three-pointer from Mikayla Blount with 6:39 to go.

Blount earned her first start in the game against the Javelinas and made the most of it, pulling down four rebounds and scoring six points to go along with a strong defensive performance that included a block and a steal.

Forward Ekiya Gray helped the Belles make the gap even wider, hitting a jumper and then grabbing a rebound and kicking the ball out to Keanna Kelly for a layup to put ASU up 28-12 with just over two minutes remaining.

Gray and Kelly also finished the game in double figures with Kelly getting 15 points and Gray getting 12 to go along with seven rebounds.

Following the performances of Gray and Kelly, ASU now has six different players averaging double figures for the season.

The Javelinas closed the half on a 9-0 run, however, and the two teams headed into the locker room with Angelo State up by seven.

ASU traded buckets with TAMUK to open the second half with the Belles going back up by 11 on a three-pointer from Hampton with 8:27 left in the third quarter.

Texas A&M-Kingsville continued to press on defense though and hit shots to close the gap to just two points just two minutes later, forcing a timeout from the Belles.

Out of the timeout, Angelo State pushed back out in front, scoring 10 of the game's next 11 points to rebuild their lead. Heading into the final quarter, the Belles were still out in front by seven points.

The Javelinas went on another run to start the fourth quarter, pulling even with the Belles for the first time since the first quarter with 6:20 left in the game.

A three-pointer from Kelly gave the Belles some breathing room with 5:32 left to play, and the senior hit again from down town just over a minute later to push the lead to four. ASU's defense helped keep the lead, as Blount blocked a shot with just under two minutes to play to push the gap wider.

With 58 seconds to go, Kelly capped off her clutch performance with yet another three-pointer to push the gap to double-digits.

The Belles hit free throws in the final minute to hold the lead, including five from Greenwood, and the game ended with ASU on top by 11.

Angelo State will be back on the court in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center at 2 p.m. Saturday to take on Texas Woman's.
