DENTON – The Angelo State women's basketball team defeated Oklahoma Christian University 69-62 to move to 1-0 on the season. The game was part of the Texas Woman's University Tournament.
Senior guard and preseason Lone Star Conference player of the year Marquita Daniels led the Belles with 22 points on 8-16 shooting, including a dagger three pointer with less than 30 seconds left on the clock. Dezirae Hampton and De'Anira Moore joined her in double figures with 18 and 11 points, respectively.
Maria Delgado led the Belles defensively with 11 rebounds, and Moore added 9. The team also recorded 13 steals, with Hampton and Daniels chipping in with four each.
The Belles got off to a fast start, as they were up 13-1 at the first media timeout. Oklahoma Christian battled back, however, and got within three points by halftime at 34-31.
The game seesawed back and forth throughout the second half, with neither team gaining much of an edge until Daniels hit a three with 25 seconds left. The Belles made four free throws within the last 16 seconds of the game to provide the final margin.
The Belles will be in action again tomorrow as they face West Alabama at 2 p.m.
