SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team is on the road, taking on Rollins College on Tuesday and Le Moyne College on Wednesday in Las Vegas as a part of the Holiday Hoops Classic.
Rollins comes into Sunday's matchup with a record identical to ASU's at 7-2 this season, but have won their last two games, including head coach Tom Klusman's 700th career win in their last contest. Klusman is fifth among active Division II Coaches and ranks ninth all-time. The Tars are led by Jakobi Bonner and Connor Mckim, who are both averaging more than 15 points per game on the season.
Le Moyne this season is 6-3 with a 4-2 record in the Northeast 10 Conference. They have four players averaging double figures this season, including Kobi Nwandu, who is leading the team with 18 points per game.
Angelo State this season is 7-2 and second in the Lone Star Conference in scoring offense with an average of 83.4 points per game. They are also averaging exactly 15 offensive rebounds a game, which leads the LSC.
Senior Daron Mims leads the scoring effort for the Rams and ranks No. 7 in the LSC with 14.6 points per game. Mims also has 15 assists and has hit 14 three-pointers on the year.
Three other Rams are averaging double-figures through the first nine games of the year, including Ronald Bell, Antonio Singleton and Josh Boutte.
Singleton just recently pushed his scoring average into double figures after matching his single-game career high last weekend with 33 points against St. Mary's. The senior also had 10 rebounds in the game first his first career double-double, earning him LSC Offensive Player of the Week. He is now averaging 11.3 points a game.
Ronald Bell ranks just above Singleton on the season at 13.3 points per game. The Atlanta native is also tied for the team lead in rebounding, pulling down an average of 7.1 boards per game. He is tied in rebounding with Boutte, who is also scoring 10.2 points per contest.
The balanced Angelo State attack has left another four players averaging at least six points a game as the Rams spread the scoring around. Collin Turner sits just below the double-digit scoring mark with 8.2 points per game.
Just behind Turner is James Kirksey, who is averaging 6.2 points a game, but ranks first in three other categories. Kirksey is the team leader in assists with 24 on the year and also leads the Rams on defense with 19 steals and seven blocks.
Both Paul Williasm and Kiair Crouch are averaging better than six a game at 7.1 and 6.9 respectively. Crouch is also second on the team with 18 assists, while Williams has hit 11 three-pointers off the bench.
Other contributing Rams this season have included Marcel Pettway, who pulls down 4.1 rebounds a game, Valentine Sangoyomi, who has started seven of the nine games, Yildon Mendoza, who scores 2.8 points a game, and Jordan Caldwell, who has appeared in three games.
