Rams take on regional foe St. Mary’s

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team is playing just one game this week, taking on a Heartland Conference opponent in St. Mary's this Saturday at 4 p.m. in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.

The Rams come into the matchup with a 6-2 record on the season and a 1-1 showing through last weekend's first two Lone Star Conference matchups.

ASU currently ranks second in the LSC in scoring offense, averaging 82.8 points per game while giving up just 70.8 per game, which also ranks fourth in the league.

Two Rams rank in the top[ 10 in scoring average so far this season in Ronald Bell (8th) and Daron Mims (9th). Bell is currently averaging 14.3 points per game, shooting 48% from the field while also hitting six of his 16 three-point attempts. The Atlanta native is also the second best rebounder on the team, pulling down just over seven boards per game.

Mims is close behind Bell in scoring, raising his average to 14.1 points per game after a 21-point performance in the Rams' last game against Tarleton State. He has eight steals and 15 assists.

Only one other Ram is averaging double figures in the Ram's balanced offense, with Josh Boutte getting 11 points a game. Boutte is also Angelo State's leading rebounder and ranks four in the LSC on the glass, pulling down 7.5 boards per game, including 3.9 on the offensive end. His offensive rebounding average leads the Lone Star Conference.

Spreading the scoring around this season, five other Rams are currently contributing at least five points a game on offense. Antonio Singleton is ASU's leading three-point shooter on the year and is averaging 8.6 points a game on the bench.

James Kirksey ranks just behind Singleton with 8.5 points per game, but is ASU's leading defender. He leads the team in both steals (17) and blocks (7), while also racking up a team-high 21 assists.

Guard Collin Turner was out during the first week of conference play, but has started six times this year and is averaging 8.2 points per game. He has been efficient from behind the arc, hitting nine three-pointers on the year.

After Turner, Paul Williams and Kiair Crouch round out the group of scorers averaging at least five points a game. Williams has averaged exactly seven points on the year, but is also second on the team with 13 steals. Crouch started the last two games with Turner out, scoring a season-high 14 points in last Saturday's win against Tarleton State.

Other contributors this season include Marcel Pettway with 4.5 rebounds per game, Yildon Mendoza with 2.9 points a game and Valentine Sangoyomi, who has stared six of eight games this year.
