ABILENE - The Angelo State women's tennis team returned to spring action for the first time since 1986 with a bang Thursday afternoon, defeating Hardin-Simons 9-0 in Abilene.
The Belles (1-0) took all three of the doubles points and got wins from all six in the individual matches as head coach Chris Bizot earned his first at Angelo State.
In the doubles portion of the match, ASU used the pairings of Maria Delgadillo/Ena Ovcina, Lucie Maitrot/Zoe Gubbels and Virginie Becht/Yasmine Ansari.
Deldgadillo and Ovcina and Gubbel and Becht both took care of business on their respective courts with 8-1 wins, while Ansari and Becht earned an 8-0 shutout win of their own. The three wins pushed the Belles out to an early 3-0 lead.
Ansari continued to shut out her opponents in singles competition, winning 6-0 and 6-0 for another point, and Gubbels earned a pair of 6-0 decisions as well. Gubbels is now 4-4 at ASU.
Maitrot and Dreux both won their matchs 6-2, 6-0, with Ovcina winning 6-0, 6-2 and Delgadillo winning 6-2, 6-2. Delgadillo has the best record of the seven Belles, coming in at 7-2 after the win at Hardin-Simmons.
Angelo State will be on the road again for their next match as they take on Texas Wesleyan at 2 p.m. February 8 in Fort Worth. The Belles will then return to campus for the first time since 1986 at 10 a.m. February 10 as they take on St. Edward's. The home opener will begin with a ceremony at 9:45 to welcome tennis back to campus and there will be free food and giveaways for fans as well.
