EDMOND, Oklahoma – The Angelo State tennis team played its final regular season match of the season Saturday, losing to No. 6 Central Oklahoma 5-0.
With the loss, the Belles finish their first spring season of play since 1986 with a 15-8 record and a 6-6 showing in Lone Star Conference play.
The sixth-ranked Bronchos started off the match strong by taking all three doubles points. Ena Ovcina and Maria Delgadillo fell on court one 8-3 for the first point taken of the day. Yasmine Ansari and Lucie Maitrot also fell on court three by a score of 8-3.
ASU had a lead early on court two, with Virginie Becht and Zoe Gubbels going up 3-1 early. The Bronchos tied the match at 5-5, however, and took the third and final doubles point 8-6. The loss was the first the pairing of Becht and Gubbels have suffered as a pair this season.
Moving into singles play, the two teams agreed to play to match clinch, meaning the team to score five points would win.
Ovcina earned a first set win on court one for the Belles, but all five other courts fell in the first set. Becht and Gubbels lost their singles matches, securing the Broncho win.
Angelo State will now begin preparation for the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament April 20-21 Corpus Christi.
